Personal Statement

I am a college graduate in law and previously worked for three years on a NY Law firm as a legal assistant. Since childhood, I encountered situations that required the application of the law. As a result, I started reading more about laws in the country, and since then, I have gained an interest in pursuing law at my higher education. Although I gained interest in law at a young age, working in the field helped me develop more interest to academically advance in law to advance my knowledge in the field to become competent and effective in practicing law.

When I was 12 years together with my mother, I immigrated to the US and had a difficult immigration experience. My mother decided to seek asylum in the US due to our experiences in her home country. After arriving in the US, my mother did not know anyone, and thus nobody would help us; thus, my mother worked as casual labor, mainly affording basic needs such as housing, clothing, and healthcare. Despite the challenges, I was capable of completing high school education, and due to my passion for law, I applied for a law course in college. I was lucky to be given a chance which I eventually completed despite the challenges I experienced.

I experienced mental issues in college for the first two and half years, which significantly influenced my grades. My grades were significantly low during this period, but I did not opt to drop out of school. Instead, I experienced mental complications that impacted my cognitive functioning, such as short memory and minimal concentration in class, leading to low grades. The major cause of the mental issues was the challenges I was experiencing back at home. As a result, I was pushed to work as casual about paying for my school fees in addition to the little support I received from my mother. However, I have never felt demotivated or lost interest in my studies, and in the second year, I stabilized mentally, and thus my grades consequently improved. Mental issues are a common factor experienced by many higher education students, especially if they are from poor backgrounds. In most instances, some of them end up dropping out of school until they stabilize financially or quit completely.   In the end, I was capable of graduating with a college degree in law, and thus I started my profession as a law consultant.

I have worked for a NY Law firm for three years, gaining experience and practice in law. I worked mostly in the corporate and business law departments. I performed corporate document drafting, license application, and consultation services to client inquiries about business agreements. In the initial years of practice, I faced many challenges and often relied on superiors to make decisions. For instance, there was a time two clients came needing an agreement related to intellectual property law. Still, because I had never drafted the same, I consulted colleagues and superiors who highlighted some mistakes I corrected. However, as I progressed, I could complete most of the legal issues presented by clients without consulting my superiors. As a result, my employer has been impressed by my engagements and dedication to learning more about law, recommending that I apply for a law degree education. According to my manager, a JD holder in law, I could benefit greatly from advancing my education in law as I have a great passion for the field. They always state that they predict that it will be highly successful when I create a law firm in the future. This is because I have created a clientele base as most clients I help consult me when they encounter legal issues for help and recommend my employer and me to their friends. This shows that I have significantly gained experience in law. Although the law is my profession, I am always happy to impact other people positively, and thus, by pursuing law, I would help more clients and individuals in legal matters.

I plan to create a law consultation firm focusing mainly on business and corporate law in the future. Achieving this dream calls for significant knowledge in law, as I would be presented with different issues that I must apply the law and resolve. As a result, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in law would be highly significant in my future endeavors as an entrepreneur in the legal industry. Apart from this, I want to inspire young immigrants who go through the difficulties and give up on their dreams due to the common belief that they cannot make it. Critically, many immigrants drop out of school and engage in criminal activities due to their challenges, especially poverty. As a result, they would easily make the right decisions to pursue their goals and interests against all odds when they encounter my story. Apart from this, I wish to mentor more individuals to apply for law degrees because I know their advantages.

In conclusion, my philosophy is that I am not the only beneficiary for graduating with a law degree, as it would benefit society by promoting justice and fairness. I believe every person, regardless of their social status, needs to access justice, and thus, by pursuing a law degree, I would help many people to achieve such. My employer and head attorney at the firm would be highly happy if they find out that I have joined a university to advance my studies in law, as that has been their recommendation in recent times. The degree education will be highly important in running a law firm and legal consultation company in the future. It would help make critical decisions to questions and issues posed by clients. Overall, I believe being given a chance to further my education would significantly impact the law field in the US.
