Law School, Personal Statement Example

Even before I completed high school, my family let me know implicitly that I would be taking over the family business. As a result, the major I chose at Bloomsburg University was not the one which would be a best fit to my interests and strengths but rather the one which would prepare me to take over the family business. As a result, I really didn’t take college education seriously and my lack of commitment was reflected in my grades.

But my experiences at Bloomsburg and later working for family business convinced me law is the best career fit for me. At Bloomsburg, I would often engage in legal and political discussions with friends because I enjoy critical thinking and logical reasoning and am also passionate about improving the world, especially the lives of the less-fortunate members of the society. When I started working for family business, I did it out of obligation and didn’t really enjoy my work. It forced me to think if I cannot commit myself to the family business at the beginning, how I would be able to manage it in the long run. I believe career success requires one’s heart to be in his work. As I started thinking about potential career alternative, law emerged as the clear choice.

I have chosen university name not only due to world class faculty but also its talented student body that comes from a wide range of ethnic and professional backgrounds. In addition, the university also has unrivaled professional network which will allow me to network with both leading law firms as well as non-profit organizations. I hope to gain experience in both the private and the public sector in order to expand my skills set as well as perspectives.
