Male Nurse, Personal Statement Example

Words: 405

Personal Statement

During my nearly 10 years working at this facility, I have always taken great care to treat patients with respect and competence. Because of the length of time of my employment here, I am quite familiar with many of the patients for whom I care; I am also extremely aware of my professional and ethical obligations regarding the care of such patients. I am extremely bewildered by the recent accusations made by a female patient, and I am writing this essay to defend myself against such suspicions. I hope that this document will be given the serious consideration with which it is written.

On Thursday, December 27, 2012, I worked my usual shift, which included making sure that two patients who had been engaging in physical contact (kissing) remained separate and unable to continue such behavior. I was particularly cautious about these patients because the female involved is quite unstable and has been known to seek male attention, according to her previous history. Because of this activity, I was very careful to keep these two patients separated. My shift was uneventful, and I went home at its completion. Nor did I witness any other male coming in close proximity to this patient while I was working. I was utterly shocked when, the next day, I was contacted by the Director of Nursing, who told me that I needed to stay home because of an investigation regarding this female patient’s accusations that I had touched her inappropriately. Although I am aware that this patient has had many psychotic issues, I was completely taken aback because I have had a good relationship with her, always appropriate, and have found her very well able to articulate her needs. I am utterly appalled that anyone might take advantage of this, or any, patient, and find it hard to imagine that any staff member who is charged with caring for these patients would harm any of them in any way. I take seriously my role as an advocate for my patients, a significant part of which involves making sure that they are safe and protected. As shocking as it is that someone may have harmed this patient is any suspicion that I could be involved in such a heinous act. I hope that this investigation will include speaking with other staff about my commitment to patient care and the serious nature with which I hold my position as a charge nurse.
