Master’s in Tourism, Personal Statement Example

Introduction

I have always had a passion for travel and tourism and this led me to the completion of a Bachelors Diploma in Tourism, a four year course between 2007-2011. This was achieved at the National Aviation University in the Ukraine. This now leads me to my next progressive step by undertaking a Master’s Degree in the United Kingdom. I am already involved on a pre-masters course that will provide an excellent foundation for the Master’s degree program. In addition I am focusing on self-improvement towards betterment of my academic skills in essay writing and presentations.

Related Work Experience

I have worked as a co-ordinator in an international network providing assistance and claims handling services for third party clients such as assistance and assurance companies in 2008-2009. The responsibilities were comprehensive and included dealing with invoices, customer correspondence, organization of overseas medical aid etc. In addition during the summer of 2010 I had a summer practice with a tourist company gaining experience in communications and working with customers in the capacity of helping with bookings, providing travel advice, assisting with hotels and transportation etc.

My work experience provided me with considerable social interaction dealing with clients from different countries and cultures. This assisted in the development of my communication and problem solving skills and the flexibility of dealing with people from different age groups and requirements. I demonstrated to my employers that I was a flexible and adaptable person whilst retaining a high degree of customer focus. I was extremely committed to the job and could be relied upon to deliver excellent customer services quality.

Study in the UK

I have elected to complete my Master’s degree in the UK owing to the high quality of the Educational System in this country. The UK is also well positioned for future career opportunities within the European tourism industry where I could gain future consolidation of experience and learning. I also want to use this time in order to improve my knowledge and understanding of English culture and traditions. The level of diversity that exists in the UK will further help in the more advanced aspects of studying tourism.

Master’s Degree Studies

It is recognised that the tourism sector has emerged as one of the world’s largest industries. As such it provides tremendous opportunities for those wishing to acquire leadership roles in this industry. It has been estimated that there are some 2 million jobs related to tourism in the UK around 5% of those employed being in the tourist related industry. The importance of London and the Olympic Games in 2012 underscores the dominant position in the UK marketplace. I seek postgraduate studies in Tourism in order to improve my knowledge, skills and competencies in this arena and leverage upon this to develop a managerial career in tourism in the UK, Europe or world-wide. Exposure to the UK educational system and business environment will enhance my future opportunities and prospects in this area.

As such I will look towards a University setting with good research credentials, a reliable library and research facilities and the ability to have a good peer group with similar interests and to develop a future network. In addition, recognised experts by way of professors who can provide the requisite level of learning required.
