DeGroat, Bernie. Media influence eating disorders. 22 10 1997. http://ur.umich.edu/9798/Oct22_97/media.htm. 3 10 2012.

Bernie DeGroat of the University of Michigan provided an interesting analysis on the linkage of eating disorders and that of fashion magazine readers.  This primarily aimed at women who change behavioural habits to adopt the thin profiles of the models featured in the magazines. As opposed to sensible diets this can lead to serious eating disorders like that of Anorexia and other potential physical and psychological problems.   The research was mainly that of an empirical nature through a series of surveys “In a survey of 232 female undergraduate students at a large Midwestern university in 1994, Harrison found that about 15 percent of the women met criteria for disordered eating–signs of anorexia or bulimia, body dissatisfaction, a drive for thinness, perfectionism and a sense of personal ineffectiveness.” (DeGroat).  The research was limited in size and scope and equally focused on a specific geographical area.  It would however provide a useful input to wider studies carried out in this area.

Harrison. “The relationship between media consumption and eating disorders.” Journal of Communications Vol 47(1) (1997): 40.

A similar study was carried out but expanded into women’s media habits including that of magazines, reading, television etc.  This was shown to have a pronounced impact on the behavioural conditions of women relating to diet and eating habits.  The media imposes considerable pressure on these groups to be seen as healthy attractive thin beings and the image of appearing beautiful in a fashion conscious sense.  “Exposure to TDP media appears to be associated with a subsequent increase in eating disorder symptomatology.” (K Harrison).

Kirsh, Stephen. Media and Youth: A developmental perspective. New York: John Wiley, 2009.

(Kirsh)

Varied. Medias role in eating Disorders Media’s Role in Eating Disorders. 3 10 2012. http://hti.math.uh.edu/curriculum/units/2006/04/06.04.02.php.

The Houston Teachers Institute provides a look at the influence of the media on eating disorders by way of a series of comparative interviews. This enables the reader to grasp the importance of this from a number of different perspectives.  This is a powerful means of conveying the message as the reader is able to see the correlations of opinions from different societal groups.  (Varied)
