A steadfast desire to positively impact people’s lives while remaining constantly challenged and intellectually engaged propelled my desire to pursue a career in medicine. Those very aspirations, in conjunction with insights gained through my diverse, hands-on experiences during medical school, drove me to pursue a professional career in cardiac surgery. The patients I had the pleasure of treating have provided me with great insights into medical problems I will treat, and the doctors whom I have collaborated and worked with modeled what type of physician I aspire to become. On the first day of my surgical internship, I was introduced to a patient who had undergone a complicated colon resection. My task on the surgical team was to undress his abdominal wounds every morning so that his healing could be monitored. Relatively new to surgery, I lacked experience with such types of wounds, so the notion of filling up open spaces on a man’s abdomen was wholly foreign to me. Over time, I grew quite accustomed to this role and eventually comprehended its practicality, and changing wound dressings daily represents my first hands-on experience of utilizing my own two hands for the purpose of healing. To reduce the patient’s pain and discomfort, changing this patient’s dressing gave me an opportunity to use both gentleness and speed. This patient also helped me learn about caring for patients on a more personal level, as I soon realized that making complex decisions would be a quotidian feature in my life as a surgeon. With a perforation of his bowel threatening his already tenuous health status, the surgical team believed that a medical intervention was necessary despite how risky an operation was. Difficult decisions such as that one mandated that I calculate and balance risks intrinsic with any surgical operation.
During my childhood, I regularly accompanied my father, who is pediatrician, to various cerebral palsy rehabilitation centers where I was able to meet and interact with a lot children suffering from CP. I played with them a lot and gave them many gifts because I forged strong relationships with them. One day, I told my dad I wanted to pursue a career as a doctor so that I could help those individuals suffering from illnesses such as cerebral palsy live a fulfilling life like my own family and classmates did. After I discussed my career aspirations with my father, he gave me first aid bag with which I used to play the role of doctor when I played with my friends. It was then that my fervor for medicine and love of surgery germinated. My dream began to materialize when I got accepted into a highly prestigious medical school in Sudan called the University of Khartoum.
While working at the Department of General Surgery and Otolaryngology, my current job, the operating room undeniably attracted me to the field of general surgery. The skills and ability of attending surgeons to eradicate and even cure disease that could have been a death sentence for the patient was very inspiring. The complexity and beauty of the human body and anatomy propelled me to learn everything that I could about the structure of the human body. Furthermore, interacting as a resident with the teaching surgeon inspired me that I too could master necessary techniques to treat and cure debilitating diseases. Although my hands-on experiences in the operating room originally drew me into the field of surgery, I have realized that diagnosing a disease, devising a proper course of treatment, and taking care of surgical patients regardless of how complex the scenario are in themselves both challenging and rewarding. Surgery will enable me to utilize, develop, and strengthen skills I have hitherto develop, including the capacity to educate patients about their health problems and fomenting a rapport with patients. An ideal surgical residency program retains a strong, steadfast commitment towards educating residence in both didactic and clinical formats. More practice and training will enable me to hone my skills in treatment and diagnosis. Incorporating laboratory or clinical research will also be a significant facet of my medical education. Research will allow me to make valuable contributions in a broad sense to the field of surgery with the hopes of providing more evidence that would enhance patient care while also cultivating my own intellectual growth.
I seek a surgical residency program that offers its residents exposure to a vast array of surgical cases while also allowing for research experience. I believe I will be a great asset to any residency program and will contribute my vibrant energy and quality patient care through my enthusiasm, adherent values, optimism, unceasing work ethic, and my persistent desire to teach as well as to learn. My professional experiences thus far have molded me into a doctor who establishes a great rapport with staff as well as patients. I hope to become an accomplished cardiac surgeon so that I can return home and provide medical assistance to the poor in addition to teaching medical students in Sudan. I am sincerely devoted to the field of surgery and want to be challenged by the versatile, fast-paced environment that the United States has to offer so that I can continue to improve the quality of my patient care. By being accepted into this program, I will not only be a sufficient physician but also a tireless public servant. Above all else, I aspire to be a humble educator who wants to impart information and patients in a cogent, coherent, and clear manner. This program is the perfect fit for me to be able to improve myself as a doctor and individual. From my parents, I learned to dream big, work hard and tirelessly, and take great pride in completing any tasks required of me. Throughout my education in medicine, I have learned to appreciate working collaboratively and as part of a team that is steadfastly dedicated to patient care. I look forward to and will embrace the roles of clinician and pedagogue during surgical residency training. The most important role for my future as a surgeon, however, is that of a learner as the field of general surgery continues to evolve and advance. As such, I eagerly await to embark on these endeavors in the near future
