Medical School Admission, Personal Statement Example

Introduction

I am a recent graduate from the University of California with a B.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences. I am passionate about the field of Healthcare and in particular for caring relative to the poorer and those underserved people within Healthcare. As such I am applying to Medical School in order to progress my career within Health and Medicine. I believe that I have the dedication, perseverance and self-motivation in order to succeed as a medical practitioner. I ultimately would like to work towards a leadership role and have developed some work experience towards achieving that goal.

Early Accomplishments

I have developed some initial work experience towards the attainment of my goals and relative to my application for Medical School. This has included some leadership experience at University where I was engaged as an advisor to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs relative to such items as management and operations, improvement of Campus Unions and recreational services and programs. I have held the position of ‘Student Health Insurance Plan Committee Chair’ providing me with valuable administrative experience and leadership roles in chairing important meetings. Other similar working roles including that of Phi Delta Epsilon CA Kappa Chair President from April 2010 – March 2011. This involved managing an Executive Board plus providing the lead to a 40+ membership group.

Relevant Work Experience

I have worked as a Laboratory Intern at Calzyme Laboratories between June to Sept 2008 and performed various lab tasks including the purification of enzymes and observing the process of enzyme purification from raw product to the finished state. In addition, I shadowed Dr. Bravo MD following the routine diagnosis of young patients in the 18 year old group and as such gaining a valuable insight into the patient and doctor relationship in paediatric medicine. Finally working as a French Hospital volunteer from 2006 to 2008 where I worked as the manager of the front desk directing patients to nurse stations and directing visitors to patient rooms. Assisted in the transportation of patients to different hospital locations and transferred lab sample work between different departments.

Outside and other interests

I take a strong interest in community affairs and maintaining my health by personal exercise programs. I enjoy reading and conducting research in the Medical field. I enjoy meeting people and discussing similar interests.

Goals for attending medical school.

I wish to consolidate the work I have started from my B.Sc. in Biological Sciences and work towards a post graduate qualification in Medical Sciences. I have a strong passion for the subject area and would like to develop a career in this area based upon a strong foundation of postgraduate study. I believe your medical school with its excellent reputation and strong research facilities will help me to attain my goals. I also want to build a peer group network of similar students who have likeminded aspirations and goals to that of myself.

I am also looking for a curriculum that will offer a diverse range of subject matter but equally assist in helping to assist with certain areas of specialisation. I see that as an important step towards gaining future employment opportunities and building a foundation for future work experience in the medical field.
