The collaborative effort at UCSF to fund a new initiative at the Diabetes Center appears to be a successful endeavor due to the wealth of resources that the 20 campuses are able to pool together in order to achieve this goal. It appears that this collaboration will be enhanced by the excellent communication that exists between each of UCSF’s physical locations. An additional advantage is that such a collaboration will allow the decreased amount of funding awarded by the National Science Foundation to be used more efficiently. However, an important consideration regarding the critical challenges that the center’s director faces is that there are a lot of individuals in the geographic area that will wish to seek assistance from the Diabetes Center and that it will be difficult to treat and provide education to all of them given the amount of funding available.

Ultimately, sparking collaboration across silos is beneficial. In this particular setting, doing so allowed scientists who specialize in a variety of disciplines to work together closely in order to achieve a common goal. The success of the effort will ultimately be measured based on the change in the prevalence and incidence of diabetes in San Francisco. To do so, the collaboration plans to put a variety of treatment protocols in place to address the varying needs of their diabetic patients. In addition, they are developing new tools that could be used to enhance the treatment methods offered. To supplement these practices, the team wishes to implement educational programs that will teach the population to modify their lifestyle choices in order to enhance their overall health. The collaborative will likely be successful due to the many locations that interested patients could visit in order to receive treatment and a potential for lifelong health.
