Monica Hobbs has been running her own home based day licensed care business for 5 years. Little Angeles Daycare is located on the ground floor of Monica’s two storied house. The centre has 5 infants under the age of 18 months and 10 children between the ages of 2-4. Monica herself is a mother of two children aged 9 and 5. In addition to running her own business she has recently completed an Associate Degree in Early childhood education and is certified in CPR and first Aid. She handles the preschool classes and activities while another aide handles the infants. Here is a short interview that I conducted with Monica about her business expansion and the need to hire a new teacher
Interview
- How and when would you determine the need to create a job position within your business?
An increase in business activity would determine the need to create a job position in the business. (Prien,2009) The centre has currently been seeking additional enrollments and plans to open another pre-school class soon. The new classroom will be dedicated to 4 year olds and focus on preparing them for kindergarten. I would need to hire a preschool teacher to run the new class.
- What strategy would use to outline the position’s details?
I would make a list of all the requirements needed for the position like the relevant certification experience background clearance and stipulated qualifications as well as a list of personal attributes that would suit the job and the timings I would require the teacher to work(Mader Clark,2008)
- What would the duties be?
The duties include the ability to lead a preschool classroom help in planning and implementing preschool curriculum for 4 year olds, meeting with parents, preparing monthly reports and keeping the classroom neat tidy and sanitary
- What would the performance requirements for the position be?
The teacher has to be punctual, keep regular attendance and be a team player. She must also strictly follow safety and licensing requirements implemented in the school
- What preexisting knowledge and skills would be required for the position?
The job candidate should have at least 12 ECE units and 6 months prior experience in a preschool environment. They should also have CPR training as well as TB clearance and fingerprinting clearance.
Job Description
Little Angeles Daycare a home based licensed day care centre , is currently seeking a full time infant and preschool teacher to assist us in achieving our mission statement of “giving each student the best education possible”. The candidate would be selected on the basis of the following evaluation criteria ( Cushway, 2008)
Qualifications
- Must have at least 12 ECE units. Proof of transcript required.
- 6 months paid experience as an infant/preschool teacher preferred.
- CPR/First Aid Certified
- Fingerprint clearance
- TB clearance
Requirements
- A nurturing and positive attitude
- must be available to work fulltime Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.
- Be able to lead a classroom independently as well as help in planning and implementing curriculum for the 4 year old classroom
- Must possess the confidence and ability to meet and communicate with potential parents in a respectful fashion
- be a Team player.
- Strictly enforce safety and licensing regulations.
- Other duties will include keeping the classroom sanitary and clean.
- Needs to exhibit excellent attendance and punctuality
The application of prospective Candidates who do not meet the above criterion will not be considered at all. (Cushway,2006)
Rationale
All licensed day care centers are required by federal regulations to hire care givers only after they pass a TB clearance and a Fingerprint Test. Further stipulations also require that teachers have at least 12 child development or ECE units and be CPR/first aid certified. The qualification criterion listed in the job description above are therefore standard and are compulsory for this position. It is also important that the teacher has a positive and nurturing attitude and some prior experience in the classroom as she will be handling a class of very active and lively 4 years old attendance. The teacher needs to strictly enforce safety rules and will be conducting regular fire drills. Regular attendance and punctuality is an absolute essential as the teacher will not have a backup for at least six months.
