Motherhood and Medical Ethics: Looking beyond Conception and Pregnancy

Background

The alteration of human reproduction has drastically changed the human view over the real value and real meaning of motherhood. In Colleen Farrell’s (2013) article entitled Motherhood and Medical Ethics: Looking beyond Conception and Pregnancy, she tries to point out how modern living has affected the way humans live and the overall condition by which they understand the real meaning of being able to mother a child. In this article, the distinct consideration over women who cannot have children due to particularly harsh medical conditions and those who abort the unborn due to personal and financial reasons are considered accordingly. These points also raise ethical issues that usually question the real worth of healthcare developments concerning conception and the real meaning of motherhood.

Summary

In the article Farrell wrote, she distinctively points out that reproduction or the way a mother conceives a child is basically considered as the preliminary establishment of motherhood in the past. Nevertheless, due to developments such as in vitro fertilization, such issue on motherhood beginning at the point of conception has changed. How has this change affected the new generations and the way they are cared for? The debates that spur from such issue specifically create a clear perception on  how modernity influences human thinking as a whole.

Analysis and Critique

The author practically provided a clear depiction on the confusion over the role of medicine in improving the process by which humans reproduce or halt reproduction at that. Pointing out that human behavior has a great impact on the whole process, it could be analyzed that the author took command on the topic through utilizing expert comments from individuals and medical practitioners who have a ‘say’ on the issue of abortion and its supposed ‘opposite’ operation which is in vitro fertilization. Overall, the article provides a great source of dependable information that could enlighten the readers on how medical developments actually affect the human behavior towards life and its importance.

Conclusion

It could not be denied that technology and medical science have already gone beyond the outskirts of their limit [as considered in the past]. Exploring the almost impossible options of reproduction, medicine has specifically provided humans different options on defining and deciding for themselves with regards the issue of sex and reproduction. Nevertheless, although these advancements could be considered efficient and somewhat necessary, it could not be denied that there will always be a negative side to every good aspect of a particular matter. In this case, Farrell points out that such negativity on medical science and the advancements it embraces largely depend on how humans accept and perceive the changes and choice provided to them through medical procedures involving reproduction issues.
