Research Proposal

Transport and communication has been a vital aspect of human life since time immemorial. It has called for development in technology to the ever-expanding need of to attend to new opportunities and challenges in these fields. The introduction of motorcycles in the transport industry significantly helps to find a solution to transport challenges (Okada, 2010). A motorcycle can be defined as a two- or three wheeled powered vehicle for on-road, off-road or dual-purpose utility. These vehicles must meet the state’s standards of certification and to be licensed in order to be used in public roadways.

This paper interests in the motorcycle industry since it has witnessed significant growth over the last decades. There has been an increase in motorcycle production, sales, and registration. It is also notable that its usage has increased remarkably easing the burden of transportation. Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC), a national trade association in US was introduced to promote and preserve motorcycling and industry through the relation with government, statistics, communication, technology, and aftermarket programs (Goodwin, 2008). It has cooperated with the government in stipulating laws regulating motorcycle equipment, insurance, age, licensing and training requirements that vary in different states.

The upward shift in motorcycle demographic, in United States, has witnessed the increase in motorcycle related accidents, property losses, injuries and fatalities. Public health and safety in motorcycle use has mainly been jeopardized by poor helmet use and growing use of racing style motorcycles commonly known as super sports, which have high power (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 2007). The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) in collaboration with the government is ensuring safety in the industry. It offers rider education and training as well as research, public awareness and technical assistance in the industry.

Therefore, the paper will bring the broad picture of the motorcycle industry, its inception, and history to the current achievements (Statistical  Anuals, 2003). It will look at the state laws and regulations governing the industry and those of other agencies concerned. The paper will analyze challenges affecting the industry, make conclusion, and recommendation.
