Reaction Paper

In the article by Grollman (2014), found that “Multiple disadvantage statuses and health the role of multiple forms of discrimination” that discusses the double disadvantage of adults that have less chances to receive poor medical treatment based on discrimination. In my opinion ,the Grollman (2014) article has some merit concerning the discrimination factor however many times it not discrimination. One of the primary issues is access to healthcare providers or diagnostic testing that should be available for the minority population. The rural areas need more qualified specialist for minorities but do not indicate there are instances of discrimination.

In replay to Grollman’s stance on minority double discrimination theory, my opinion is an example of African Americans women would be not receiving the proper testing.  The community testing centers do not have the budget for expensive cancel testing machines for African American men and women. There is no discrimination in this situation but a lack of education not discrimination that prevents these African American women and men from having access to early colorectal cancer screening.  My view is both arguments have merit but the primary reason that minorities do not get tested for cancer is because of a lack of trust of the medical community. There are many women that do not test for cancer because they do not trust the healthcare providers or the test are too expensive, in my opinion.

My response to the article by Shields (2008)” Gender intersectionality perspective” that suggest that categories of sexual orientation, gender, race and age can lead to systematic inequality. In my opinion every issue is not always a case of inequality but each situation has different and complex variables. The intersectionality is the basis of oppression within society such as bigotry, racism and sexism. These acts should be judge on each single case on its own merit not as interrelated forms of discrimination. My belief is the instances of systematic inequality does not mean that racism issues men there is presence of other type of inequality.

In my opinion women that make sacrifices but they ignore racism to advance the careers while paving the way for other women. The mainstream media needs to open discuss to change the traditional thinking. A prominent lawyer Isobel Richmond indicates women should ignore racism to push their own agendas and careers forward without stigmas and barriers. I am in agreement that one separate discriminatory incidence is not worth being isolated or prevented from advancement. The change will come in the future as more and more women are in upper management that can make a difference to change the entire culture. Once again, these are single incidents that should be addressed but are not intersectional issues. These incidents should be ignored or if the women have to be address these issues it must be a single incidents not interrelated issues such as racism, sexism, bigotry, sexual orientation, religion, age and class.

In response to the article by Calabrese et al. (2015) that found that black sexual minority women experience marginalized mental health treatment more than their white female counterparts. My response is the discrimination does exist because of their ethnic background but because of the lack of diversity training by mental health agencies, lack of provider’s awareness of differences in mental problems of black sexual minorities and preconceived misconceptions of black minorities. In my opinion, the global medical community does not have enough diversity training and mental health training of minorities which lead to inequalities and discrimination that prevent positive outcomes. In response to the article by Velez, Moraldi, & DeBlaere (2015) found that the Latino mental health discrimination issues are based on a lack of multicultural training by providers and the low-esteem of the Latino women because of lack of medical knowledge makes them vulnerable to poor outcomes. My opinion is the healthcare providers and mental health facilities that treat Latino women do not have enough diversity to address the mental health needs such language barriers. My thoughts are the diverse work environment should be acknowledged by the healthcare industry because many of the Latino patients may speak both English and Spanish. However, with all the different dialects it would make sense for the physicians to have a linguistic specialist on staff to better communication with Latino patients.

Conclusion

The Grollman theory concerning double discrimination has some merit but the primary issue is minorities not have access to advance testing and specialized physician care.. The Shields article that discuss intersectionality which every issue is not always a case of inequality because there are too many complex variables to consider. These acts should be judge on each single case on its own merit not as interrelated forms of discrimination. The Calabrese theory is flaws because discrimination does exist because of their ethnic background but because of the lack of diversity training in the mental health industry and a lack of provider’s awareness of differences in treatment plans for black sexual minorities. The Velez, Moraldi, & DeBlaere (2015) theories are not exact because healthcare providers and mental health facilities that treat Latino women do not have enough diversity to address the mental health needs such language barriers.
