My Goals to Become a Family Nurse Practitioner, Essay Example

Pages: 3

Words: 855

Essay

I have partaken in the nursing industry for quite some years now and have always had high aspirations to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. Over time, I have come across several coworkers at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, California who have regarded their learning experience at Sonoma State University to a high standard. Upon acceptance into the program, I hope to become an alumni so that I may be well-equipped to care for the rural outlying areas of Paradise or Chico, California. I have worked at the Enloe Medical Center in Neuro, Trauma, Surgical ICU for eleven years now, and absolutely love caring for the rural citizens of our quaint area here in Northern California. I have a strong desire to make a difference in my community. According to the Center of Disease Control, the United States healthcare system spent $3.7 trillion in 2013 on healthcare, however, we still have the world’s lowest life expectancy. Americans have realized that preventative medicine and evidence-based practice is the key to decreasing costs and improving life expectancy. There is nothing more that I want than to be part of this movement and to be able to teach our community how they can extend their life expectancy by taking care of themselves. When a patient talks about me, I long for him or her to say “He takes his time and genuinely cares about my well-being.” A few years back, a patient said this to me about his Nurse Practitioner and was taken aback. From that moment, I have wanted to be referred to in the same manner.

My short term goals are to go to Sonoma State University and learn the most that I can to be the most successful Practitioner that I can be. I plan to take a student loan to fulfill this endeavor. I am already making living arrangements near the school, so access to the school would be more of an ease, if and when necessary. A friend and prior coworker, Christine Martinez FNP-BC, an alumni of Sonoma State, has already offered to precept me if I additional hours are required. Christine has been a mentor to me during my pursuit to become an FNP. After graduation, I plan to apply to Enloe Medical Center in Chico or Feather River Hospital in Paradise, California, both of which serve the rural communities outlying our small community. Paradise is home to me, and the community consists of retirees, and low to moderate income families. I have been living in Paradise for twelve years, and I plan to stay here the rest of my life. I feel at home in this community and want to care for it. I am willing to work here wherever I am hired. I know I will be very content in a Family Practice setting, an Urgent Care setting, or an Emergency Room setting.

My long term goals are to be established in a Family Practice setting, Urgent Care setting, or an Emergency Room setting. There is no doubt in my mind that I will enjoy any setting. As my prior experience shows, I am dedicated to my profession and will continue this demeanor no matter what. I am extremely focused on what I am doing, and continue to educate myself by attending seminars so that I may be the best practitioner that I can be. I will continue to care for patients with true passion as I am doing right now. Moreover, I plan to continue my education to receive a doctorate degree in Nurse Practioner. I truly enjoy learning and I am a firm believer in education. Nursing provides the opportunity to learn continuously. In addition, I enjoy the educational part of nursing. On another note, I a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, which goes on mission trips to serve third-world countries once a year. It has also been a long life dream to be able to participate in giving care to those that have never had medical care before. I wish to aid individuals in third-world countries. My passion for my family and my patients will never cease to exist.

After serving my country in the U.S. Navy for five years, working on a Medical and ICU Stepdown for five years, then twelve years in Neuro, Trauma, Surgical ICU, I am ready to take the next plunge to pursue a Master’s Degree in Family Nurse Practitioner. After losing my mother at five years old to cancer, I want to be the next person to prevent a loss of a precious loss of life, and promote a better quality of life for all patients. I can guarantee you I will not let your school down, as I have never let others down regarding the many pursuits in my life. My wife and my children can attest to the fact that this pursuit means a lot to me and are fully supportive of me. As I have stated before, I can not think of a better place to continue my education than at Sonoma State University’s Family Nurse Practitioner Program. Thank you for taking the time to read my heart on paper.
