My Intended Major, Personal Statement Example

Q1: What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement.

During high school, one of my elective courses was economics. My interest started to develop.  I started reading financial magazines. Some terms were confusing; I asked my economics teacher for help. He explained different terms to help me understand the content. I realized the importance of economic knowledge in both business and the financial field. I recognized that economics would be my field of choice in college.

During 2011, I started bought in Amway, a direct selling business. I ran into trouble maintaining customers almost from the beginning. I faced a lot of difficulties managing my business and expanding my customer base. I started using the in-person training resource provided by Amway; I learned lots of skills for improving my business. One thing I learned is that our economy has become globalized. Since Amway’s platform is Internet-based, customers were able to go online from any locality.  There is no geographic limitation to attract customers.

Predicting economic trends are crucial for developing a business. From these economic trends vendors can understand how to utilize unlimited resources to gain more profit. My Amway experience helped me to decide to become a financial analyst in an investment bank. The knowledge gained from economics will make me successful in this field.

In 2012, I interned at S.K. Wong &Co., a local law firm in Hong Kong. As a general intern, I learned about how importance managerial economics related to enterprises. It helped me to realize managerial economic knowledge is a crucial part of developing a successful business.  Successful companies need better relationships with their employees. Employees will have a sense of belonging with improved working conditions. Employees need to feel they are stakeholders in the company’s management and that their input will help their organization to gain continuous financial growth.

A decrease of consumer purchasing reduces the need for some law firms. Reduction of purchasing power means that fewer consumers will need attorneys to approve, and/or to write purchase (sales) contracts. These contracts many include consumer goods for both leisure and business. Examples may include assets of a thriving enterprise or transportation items such as an automobile, or even places in which to reside, such as apartments or free-standing homes. From my experience, I learned how economic knowledge applies to daily life. My experiences solidified my desire to take economics as one of my academic specialties.

To conclude, I learned the application of economic knowledge in daily life and business. In order to enhance my economic knowledge, I would like to learn more following my acceptance in your institution. My ultimate goal is to become a leader in economics and in the business community.
