Native American Indian Dancing has been something I have always wanted to experience. I recently had the opportunity to watch a Native American Indian Dance performance. The performance was extraordinary and I greatly appreciated the music, dance, and culture. The performance was composed of four Native American Indian women and one Native American Indian boy. During the introduction of the performance, one of the Native American women introduced the performers, while the small boy played the drum. The introduction explained the different types of dancing and the meaning of the dances. The woman indicated that the American Indian Dances each had its own meaning. For instance, the first dance introduced was described as a “war” dance. The next two dances were described as an “eagle” and “butterfly” dance. The interesting correlation with the description and title of the dances was the flow and choreography that accompanied the dances. The war dance was much more dramatic and stern in the musical tones, as well as the movements of the dancers; whereas, the nature and animal dances were more joyous and elegant in tone and movement. From these dances, individuals are able to understand the culture of the Native American Indians. It is easy to pick up the sorrow associated with war and the peace associated with nature and animals.

The most memorable part of the experience was the interaction with the crowd. The audience was asked to form a circle and dance together. The American Indian woman described this type of dance as a “unity” dance. In addition, another dance was introduced to the audience in the circle and this particular dance was referred to as the “thankful” dance. The woman explained the dance as a special dance performed in unity to show thanks and appreciation. Overall, the experience was very different for me and it illustrated some of the same values that I respect in regard to family, community, and awareness for our Earth. It was also great to obtain a better understanding of the Native American Indian Culture. I have great interest to learn more about this culture and perhaps enjoy another Native American Indian dance performance.
