More often, there are reported cases of business failure. The interest is to find out the cause, with the major focus on the departmental managers. We would wish to know if their roles in the control and management of company procedures in one way or another bring in stress and no-compliance of the employees. If at all they do, then the employees may end up not offering the best, thus, resulting into failure of the company. Another issue could apply in large organizations that have inadequate departmental managers. The few present ones strain out of managing several departments thus, their output greatly affected thus there is low productivity. Thus, the result is that while other departments progressively do well, others lag behind. The study examines the impact of departmental managers on overall employees’ satisfaction. This paper aims at answering the following questions:
- Who is a successful departmental manager?
- Should a manager blame the CEO for failure of his/ her department?
- Should a problem arise, how should managers handle it?
A successful manager is a leader and not a ruler. While a ruler has personal interests with regard to authority and power, a qualified leader focuses on meeting the interests of a large group of persons (employees in this case). A competent leader aims at attaining the common goal of the success of the company. Managers ought to work together in providing a safe and comfortable environment to the employees for best performance, to produce quality products and services to serve its consumers effectively. At all costs, a manger ought to ensure there is progress in his/her department with little or no blames to the CEO, unless otherwise. Should a problem arise, then departmental managers ought to sit and discuss the issue, while trying best possible to enforce workable solutions. They ought to advise the CEO on their decisions: expansion, training, additional employees, transfer of existing employees, additional salary, and addressing legal issues.
The quantitative research methodology employed to attain the desired results. The study will employ use of surveys to collect data, where the overall performance of departments surveyed. The reputation of the departmental manager studied carefully while his/ her daily routine and functioning monitored. The records on the performance of the department studied and tally data jotted down. This is done in every department, where those departments with no managers being given a closer observation.
The dependent variable will be the employee satisfaction. We will have several independent variables as
- The remuneration level,
- presence/absence of departmental manager,
- Type of employment (fulltime/ part-time)
- Overall working conditions
With these individual performances of staff studied with close observation of their work output. Further, the performance equated to employment satisfaction. Again, satisfaction of those employees with departmental managers compared to those without departmental mangers to test the null hypothesis: Employee satisfaction is the same regardless of the presence of departmental managers. The other three hypotheses include:
- Ho: Employee satisfaction is independent on the level of remuneration Vs the alternative that it is dependent.
- Ho: Employee satisfaction independent of the type of employment (part-time/full time) Vs the alternative that it the two variables are dependent
- Ho: Employee satisfaction independent of the overall working condition Vs the alternative that satisfaction of employee dependent on the overall working condition.
The data collected summarized in form of tallies, then converted into percentage for easy analysis.
