Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship, Personal Statement Example

Introduction

My desire to specialize as a pediatric gastroenterologist emerged from two motivating factors.  First, my residency training, at St. John’s Hospital, Detroit, MI, exposed me to diverse intriguing pediatric pathological conditions. Opportunities to rotate with a pediatric gastroenterologist were many.As such, I took advantage of every avenue for learning.  I encountered many pediatric patients with gastrointestinal dysfunctions and diseases. During these interventions I observed how diagnostic testing was conducted and treatment administered. This stimulated my interest towards taking this training to another level.

The second motivating element relates to the lack of specialist of this nature in my country.During my medical schoolrotations and training at the Faculty of Medicine, Damascus University, I observed that there was a need for specialist in the field of pediatric gasrtroentology. The few pediatricians practicing gasrtroentology were not specialist, but merely working along with the single consultant in that department.

Academic skills and experience

I am a qualified pediatrician who graduated as a doctor from the Faculty of Medicine, Damascus University in ….. After migrating to United States of America I completed my residency as a pediatrician at St. John’s Hospital, Detroit, Michigan. During my residency I was fully exposed to pediatric gasrotrentorolgy, which has greatly added to my experience. However, it is my desire to become specialized in this discipline.

Social background

At the tender age of 12 an intriguing experience changed the way I thought about my life. The small town Damascus Syria where I grew up was my ideal of a wonderful life. It satisfied my desired for achieving greatness. It was a place where I learnt what it was like to be in a safe environment, a middle class neighborhood, fresh air, and generous loving people.  However, the death of one of my cousins changed everything I thought about the town I loved as well as life.

This young child was diagnosed with a liver disease. Even though I did not anything about medicine at the time I could not reconcile the suffering due to ill health he endured.  His death, the first of a close relative I can remember and my first real experience of sickness and death. I could not explain how I felt. It seemed mingled with sadness, remorse, rejection every sensation emergence at once at as one. I was so moved that for months I contemplated what I could do to help suffering humanity, especially, children.

Since then, I made up my mind to become a doctor who specializes in children’s health.

After graduating high school I applied to medical schoolsacross my country and around the world. I was first admitted to the Faculty of Medicine Damascus University and then fulfilled my dream of become a pediatrician at St. John’s Hospital, Detroit, Michigan.After completing my residency in late2007, I have gained employment at a pediatric hospital where I am still employed presently.

Conclusion

I am convinced that practicing pediatric medicine is both my gift and life purpose. Attending to children who cannot complain or explain how disease is affecting their bodies is my passion. It is my way of giving back to this beautiful universe. Over my years of practice I have developed diagnosis and treatment expertise of various pediatric conditions.If offered the grand opportunity of obtaining a pediatric gastroenterology fellowship I know that my contribution to the science would be exemplary.
