In this article, the author conveys her disgust with the material that is included in children’s books of the day. She reminisces about how books used to teach lessons, tell about true love, or even teach students something they may need to know later in life. She explains that books have taken a darker turn. The books are now about drugs, teen pregnancy, and fighting, instead of subjects that will benefit teens. Nevertheless, she still acknowledges that realistic aspect may also be beneficial for children.

The author discusses the perpetuation and repetition of norms from generation to generation. Sadly, he expresses that segregation can be one of those norms that is perpetuated by society. The author discusses how the children in Hinton’s novel develop throughout the novel. It focuses on how de-egocentricity and socialization are so prevalent in society. The author believes that Hinton purposely used teenagers to address issues that most adults are afraid to face.

In this novel, the author tells a story from the perspective of teenagers, something that had never been attempted during this time. The main character examines the world in which he lives and is able to acknowledge aspects that adults don’t understand or notice. The author also examines how society attempts to normalize its members through isolation and discrimination.

The author discusses the tainted view that society has of teenagers. She proclaims that when adults write about teenagers they write from the experiences they had as children. She reminds them that much has changed. She conveys that teens want to read about things that they are experiencing, not the things that teenagers 15 years ago experienced.

The author discusses how society attempts to change members of society in order to create a societal norm.
