I am, bluntly put, a persistent person, and I am as well very grateful for that attribute. Challenging myself and seeking the solutions to problems, in both academic and social arenas,  is never unpleasant to me because I know I am going to find the answers. I have learned that it is merely a matter of trusting yourself, and of not giving up.

Despite the advantages I have enjoyed with regard to an early education in economics provided by my father, my life, as is true of every life, has not been without its misfortunes. The divorce of my parents was a difficult time, as were the circumstances of my brother’s running away. Difficulties, however, teach. I realized something important at a very young age: giving into emotional distress and placing blame do not help anyone. There is no reversing life. There is only accepting what has occurred, trying to understand it, and then turning your energies and your heart into making things as good for everyone as they can be. My persistence will not let me give way to depression; it is too urgent, and it wants to find the solutions which must be out there, no matter the situation.

An immensely valuable experience came for me when I was elected as a drama director of an annual competition for my eleventh grade class. My duties were fairly diverse, and included appointing leaders who could contribute their skills into different committees, planning the schedules of rehearsals, and checking the progress of everything from the building of the props to performance levels. I knew this would be a complicated and arduous road, but I knew as well that we were going to do well, and I wanted to contribute all I could to the process.

There were conflicts and disagreements, and more than a few. When eager teenagers are scrambling to win a dramatic contest, it is highly unlikely that there will not be conflict. As a director, I had to face the unavoidable reality that all of my decisions would not be popular, or welcomed, and I will admit that frustration got the better of me at times. I would not, however, fall back. I trusted to my decisions, as I knew they had been made with everyone’s best interests firmly in mind, and I came to see that the best course in removing the tensions was simply to talk things over with the people involved, one on one. As I discovered, this gave me the opportunity to fully explain myself, and demonstrate respect for the team while gaining a better understanding of what their own concerns were. The strategy worked, we became a truly united troop, and we won the second prize.  More importantly, we were true to the joy and the challenge of the entire experience.

This effort stays with me, as I hope it always will, as an enormously valuable lesson in many components of living. It taught me that being optimism is vitally important when facing difficulties; you must have faith in the abilities of yourself, as you must believe in those working with you. Then, I learned that consideration and appreciation for and of others is not a random, hypothetical concept. It must be at the heart of a person’s life, as it reflects the same aspects of respect we all hope to generate for ourselves.
