I think that reading personal statements for college must be harder work than writing them. I want this brief statement at least to go easy on the reader.

Child development and children with disabilities are what I specifically plan to study in college. But in general, I am interested in helping both people and animals who need help. I volunteer as a three-year member of a Youth Advisory Council (YAC), working at shelters for juveniles and the homeless, and doing city clean-ups. I also helped with animal adoptions at PetSmart. Over the recent holidays, I volunteered at the children’s center at our nearby hospital. I enjoyed it, and it motivated me to spend next summer doing the same thing.

YAC members perform community service because we want to, not because we got a traffic ticket. It gives us an active voice in local governmental decisions affecting young people. We may not help make the laws, but we sometimes might see how they are made. We make small but positive changes where we live, and it is a unique feeling.

On the more practical side, I am currently enrolled in a business-academy. We run a virtual company in which I manage marketing and monthly advertisements. In a recent competition, we won the two top prizes for our catalogue and Impact Board. I may try to combine teaching with business, but that is all in the future.

Such is my capsule summary of work and hope.
