Pharmacy, Personal Statement Example

Personal Statement

I come from a family with a distinguished history of careers in the healthcare sector. These include my father and two of my uncles who are pharmacists as well as my two sisters who are Registered Nurses (RNs). Observing them helped me realize that healthcare professionals do not view their work just like any other profession because they are inspired to maximize the overall wellbeing of the society. I discovered in high school that my interests and strengths suited to science subjects and in addition, my father would often tell me that one should choose a career path which he/she will not only excel at but will also enjoy. By the time I started my college life, I knew that I will be following a career path in pharmacy and began looking for learning and work opportunities to prepare myself for the future.

I always had plans to engage in philanthropy after retiring from my professional career because I admire individuals like Bill Gates more for their philanthropic work than their career achievements. This is one of the keys to America’s success that each generation realizes its responsibilities towards the society. But it suddenly occurred to me that one doesn’t have to contribute to the society’s well being only after he/she has retired from her profession. It is also possible to pursue career paths that enable you to make difference in the society at the same time. As I evaluated different options, pharmacy emerged as the front runner because I was already familiar with the profession through my father and my research also revealed several useful insights such as the expanding role of pharmacists in the delivery of healthcare as well as the wide range of career paths available to pharmacists.

My short-term goals include finishing my post baccalaureate at Quinsigamond Community College with a good GPA and then obtaining impressive score on my PCAT test. Similarly, my long term goals include putting my academic and work experiences to good use as a professional pharmacist and explore opportunities to give back to the community. My Doctor of Pharmacy degree will be a natural next step which will help me further advance my knowledge so that I am able to provide the best service to my clients and help raise the quality standards in the pharmacy profession. During my research, I have come across numerous issues facing the pharmacy profession such as communication gap between physicians and pharmacists that often lead to costly errors and how technology should be embraced on a wider scale due to its potential to significantly improve operating efficiency as well as the quality of life of the patients. I also hope my Doctor of Pharmacy education will allow me to interact with some of the leading professionals in the healthcare sector who can provide me guidance in my desire to modernize the pharmacy profession to meet the needs of the 21st century.

My personal, education, and professional backgrounds make me a perfect fit for the pharmacy profession because I have my father and uncles to guide me and provide valuable suggestions and I am also looking to them to provide me with networking opportunities. As far as education is concerned, I did my undergraduate in Biology with an emphasis on Biochemistry as well as obtained my Graduate Certificate in Clinical Pathology from the University of Massachusetts. In addition, I regularly read articles about current and emerging trends in the pharmacy profession to keep myself updated. I also believe nothing replaces actual experience which is why I have obtained extensive experience as a lab assistant and technician. I have over eight years lab-related experience which include positions as biology lab assistant at the Quinsigamond Community College, Worcester, MA and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA. In addition, I have also been a Quality Assurance Lab Technician at Catania Spagna Corporation in Ayer, MA. These work experiences have not only allowed me to develop soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership but have also helped me develop expertise in different lab tasks such as preparing for tests, conducting tests, recording data, and compiling a research report. My personal, academic, and professional experiences have prepared me well for the pharmacy profession and have convinced me that pharmacy is not only my career of choice but also the one best suited to my skills and strengths.
