Philosophy of Gender and Sexuality, Article Review Example

There have been numerous debates on the ethics of gay and lesbian people in modern society.  In the last decade, the world has adopted a more liberal view to the point of now permitting gay bishops in the Church and gay marriages that include the right to adopt children.  Society as a whole has become much more tolerant of the gay community which is more grounded in the beliefs of democracy, freedom, human rights as opposed to genuinely accept the biological differences.

From an ethical viewpoint, this does go against the natural order of things, both from a religious, moral and procreation viewpoint. Whilst there is no denying the human rights of gay couples, it is considered inappropriate for adoption and raising of children. The reasons for this are that it promotes the wrong messages to society and we are essentially, within the USA, a society based upon Christian values. This means children should have a natural Mother and Father with a heterosexual relationship that is far different from a gay marriage couple. As healthy children are important to our future well-being as a species, it is considered that they should have the opportunity to be raised by biological parents or as close to that as deemed possible i.e. a Man and a Wife adopting.

By giving the gay community a classification or gender identity as the third type, it has to an extent further empowered the community to voice human rights.  Equally, it assumes that such people in that gender category are attracted to one another.  This leads to a further potential concern of child abuse within gay couple adoptions.  Many will consider from an ethical standpoint that this represent far too great a risk. Hence, why society has become more tolerant from an ethical perspective it does not mean that this is biologically correct.

No doubt this subject will continue to be hotly debated in the years to come.
