Primary Determinant of Any Particular Decision, Research Paper Example

As a decision in management translates to a commitment of purpose, and one obviously requiring some manner of restructuring an existing order, the primary determinant behind the process must be the degree to which the decision affects the organization as a whole. The relativity is inevitable; a minor decision, such as rescheduling one employee’s shifts to accommodate a personal situation, is typically easily done and with minimal effect to the organization. Conversely, a decision involving the construction and staffing of a new hospital wing clearly impacts the organization on a profound level, and consequently demands that greater effort be put into the process. In a sense, potential results actually dictate the resources necessary for the decision to be arrived at properly, as scope of dimension creates corollary effort.

There is a danger, however, when important decisions are needed. To be avoided always is “analysis paralysis,” in which both efforts and resources going to decision-making are allowed to stagnate, or be locked in a cycle not going to achieving an actual result (Liebler, McConnell, 2008, p. 166). The cycle is understandable; the management team faced with the need to cut payroll is likely conflicted in a variety of ways, as budget issues vie with employee requirements and the demands of the hospital. At the same time, excessive consideration serves neither interest. In such a scenario, management’s process must be determined by the unavoidable need to reduce spending in payroll, and accept that the challenge is achieving this with the least negative impact to staff or organization. This being the case, the decision demands extensive effort and resources because its nature is so critical to the hospital. Conversely, the result of obtaining a new piece of equipment requires less effort, as simple factors of desirability and means will enable the decision.
