Literature Synthesis Assignment – Moral issues

This Literature synthesis seeks to answer the questions, what moral principles  are important to nursing discipline involved; to what part of the ANA Code of Ethics with Interpretive Statements do these principles relate; what meaning do these principles have in my teaching practice and what are the social, legal, and ethical factors affecting students?

Literature 1:

Professional Ethical Competence in Nursing: The role of nursing instructors byBorhani, Alhani and Mohamnadi.

My reason for selecting this article is its relevance to nursing education. The authors acknowledged that teaching ethics to nursing students in a classroom setting requires a very high standard of professionalism as well as quality of care. The purpose of this study was evaluating how nursing students perceive their instructors role in promoting professional ethics. This qualitative methodology chosen by the researches engaged 15 nursing students from three different nursing schools. Surveys were then conducted applying a questionnaire instrument (Borhani, Alhani&Mohamnadi, 2010).

It was discovered that effective professional role model was one of the variables responsible for building strong ethical values among students. Clinical skills of the professional demonstrating the role model also had a great impact on the way student articulated quality of care as an ethical value.Consequently teaching ethics to nursing student facilitated their ability in developing autonomy when making ethical decisions after graduation (Borhani, Alhani&Mohamnadi, 2010)

Literature 11:

Nurse as Educator: Principles of Teaching and Learning for Nursing Practice by Susan Bacorn Bastable.

Principles discussed in this text relate to differences between ethics, morals and law. The author explained how each are applied to specific areas of nursing practice. For example, key terms in health care education embraced the education process, learning, teaching instruction; patient education; staff education; barriers to teaching and obstacles to learning. Specifically key terms in ethics, moral and law encompasses the student’s knowledge and application of beneficence, autonomy, confidentiality, malpractice, negligence, variable costs indirect costs and cost benefit(Bastable.2008).

The author contends that even though the physician is legally responsible for the quality of care dispensed in clinical settings nurses are held accountable according to their scope of practice for nursing interventions they pursue in the execution of their duties(Bastable.2008). My reason for choosing this text as a literature to review lies in the content it offers towards guiding students and instructions in establishing their personal professional values. Besides, the discussion of ethics, morals and law is extensive yet concise.

Literature 111:

Evaluation& Testing in Nursing Education by M.H. Oermann

This literature text exposes nurse educators to the ethical, moral and legal implications of testing and accreditation within nursing science.  The author specifically references the importance of codes of testing practices in nursing education as a principle. This implicates the roles of test developers in the process. When tests are executed are items fairly structured to enable students’ better understanding of concepts or for failure of  tests? As such, standards which must be maintained include informing test takers; interpreting scores and aiming to achieve fairness in test construction (Oermann, 2008).

In concluding this synthesis of literature review the focus ofwhat moral principles are important to nursing discipline involved, must be reiterated that In this case it pertains to practices in nursing education. The part of ANA Code of Ethics with Interpretive Statements these principles relate nursing certification determines commitment which is a ethical, moral and legal requirement ( American Nurses Association, 2014). The meaning these principles have in my teaching practice is that it makes me accountable for my actions as nurse educator because there are far reaching, ethical, moral and legal reactions to my interaction with students. The social, legal, and ethical factors affecting students relate to role models and fairness in testing.
