Reporting Violations and Plagiarism, Case Study Example

In the case of the university student copying another author’s work verbatim without crediting their source, I would contact the student immediately to set up a private meeting. The reason for the private meeting is so that our interaction remains confidential as I do not want to compromise the student’s reputation. As a mentor, I would deem it necessary to further educate this student on the importance of crediting sources in writing as well as the seriousness of plagiarism in both academic and professional fields.

The student may not think that plagiarism is a big deal otherwise they would not have committed it with the submission of this paper. It would be my job as a mentor to make sure that this student fully understands the severe consequences that come with plagiarizing another writer’s work. I would want to let this student know that most faculty members would take immediate disciplinary action should they ever get caught plagiarizing. I would not want this student to get in trouble, so it would be my job to make sure that they do not put themselves in such a position in the future.

There are various ways to monitor a student’s behavior when they are conducting their works of writing. There are plagiarism detection software programs that can run a student’s work against all other writings on the internet and academic data bases to detect any possible plagiarism, such as the google search conducted in the case study. Another way is to make students fully aware of the seriousness of plagiarism and how it can severely damage their reputation and credibility. Another good way to monitor students’ work as a mentor would be to allow them to have their papers reviewed by me before they submit a final copy to their classes. This way I can check for any possible plagiarism myself and make them aware of it.
