The following is my story and how I became the person I am today. I have had the privilege of growing up in a cultural and intellectual environment. My family played a major role in my development. My parents were journalists, who first met in the newsroom of “Il Globo.” a prominent Italian newspaper, where they were working at the time. Growing up, I would often hear them debating politics and economic issues. They would thoroughly analyze every topic, until all perspectives were exhausted. I admired how they were able to engage in such heated debate on hot-button social issues and still remain so deeply in love, and they helped me develop analytical skills and taught me to embrace a love of life. This is in part the reason why I enrolled myself into a University in Rome for a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Ancient History art. Born in Rome, Italy, and having had the opportunity to travel across the country, I wanted to deepen my knowledge of the region.
When I graduated, I kept with my family’s tradition by diving head first into analytical and thought provoking fields that challenged me to be informed and question the world around me. The first position I took that required me to apply myself intellectually, was a job I took as an art researcher. The experiences was enlightening, exposing me to such experiences as witnessing Michelangelo’s Last Judgment from scaffolding during a conservative work; but once I left to follow in my father’s footsteps and work in the field of journalism, I truly found my calling.
I have never studied journalism on an academic level, but through my experiences as a journalist, specifically my experience as a trainee at Ansa, one of the most prestigious Italian press agencies; I was able to gain technical media and communication skills. I learned to intermediate in digital video, photo and audio recording and editing using Avid and Final cut Pro, I established a solid understanding of social media use specifically in regards to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. I am also fluent in both Italian and English, which has truly diversified my experience on these social platforms. I have had the honor and the privilege to meet great mentors during my career life as trainee first and then as a professional reporter. These leaders, within their industries, instilled in me and understanding of excellence and ethics in my professional practices.
Currently, I work for Rai, the Italian national broadcasting radio and television network. Throughout my workday, I encounter numerous occasions where I have to utilize technical tools for shooting TV documentaries, and editing segments for broadcasting where I am proficient but acknowledge I could use more formal training. At this point of my career, I feel the urgency to enhance my life with an international experience. I am interested in excellence and I know that being accepted in your master’s program can provide me with the excellence I seek.
I want to improve my knowledge and skills in order to excel in my current company. I believe that graduating from your communications program will equip me with the skills necessary to perform in this present media market dominated by social networking, blogging, viral video distribution and all other forms of mobile media consumptions. I believe Loyola College is at the forefront of my profession and I would like to embrace what your institution has to offer me in terms of further advancing my career.
