Introduction

A concept analysis is a process designed to familiarize the researcher with the concept under study. It communicates meanings, feelings, and different understandings. The concept of self-care is one of the best-known frameworks in the self-care nursing theory. The concept behind it is that humans posses the ability to deliberately taking action in controlling their well being, life, as well as health. The concept is also connected to the literature on family dinner, which best describes the concept.

There are other concepts also connected to this theory of self-care deficit. Some of these include the concept that people should take actions adequately in their daily lives so that they can sustain their life, well-being, and their health. In addition to that, the nursing system theory proposes that well and properly experienced nurses; implement a care plan for people with self-care demands exceeding their ability to achieve required actions. The purpose of this analysis is to explain or describe this concept in terms of its compatibility, benefits, as well as its consequences. Besides, another aim is to give an insight about this concept whether it is compatible or not in various nursing centers.

Scholarly Literature Review

Various scholarly literatures have been used on the concept. This literature tries to give a clear explanation of its different aspects. Family dinner can be well described as the action of eating together as a family. It is the art of the family members taking their meals together at the same time of the day. All family members living in the same house eating a mea together (Neumark-Sztainer, 2004). Moreover, according to Videon and Manning (2003), family dinner a family having dinner together with one of the parents being available. In this article, family dinner has been referred to as the act of sitting and having meals together as family in the presence of one of the adult member. This concept has its various uses. First, a patient can use it if he or she is recovering from a certain disease. The diet prescribed by the doctor should be adhered to by the patient. In spite of that, the patient has the power to decide whether to follow the prescription or not. This will also determine his or her recovery rate. Another use of this concept is that it can be applied in avoiding chronic disease. This is due to the excessive consumption of something or the minimal consumption of a certain nutrient.

Model Cases and Defining Attributes

One of the defining attributes of the concept is that it relies specifically on people. This means that people have the ability to determine their well-being, health and also their life. For example, the importance of eating a balanced diet is clearly known. This facilitates the prevention of chronic diseases. These include osteoporosis, iron deficiency and even some cancers. Researchers noted the crucial role played by the family in the youth eating pattern determination. Numerous studies have also reported of the quality of food as an effect of family dinner. Haapalahti (2004) and Neumark-Sztainer (2003) found that the rate of family dinner was associated positively with consumption of healthy foods especially in children aged between 9 years to 14 years. It was noticed that children who had family dinner more often, the consumed more vegetables, fruits and ate minimum fried foods. Other than that they drank less soda compared to children who had less family dinners.

Furthermore, family dinner gives the chance to learn and teach manners, proper eating habits as well as correct communication skills. It also boosts the close bonds and memories that are long lasting around the family table (Videon &Manning, 2006). According to research, it was identified that adolescents who attended family dinners frequently, less expected to attend or engage weight control behaviors. This means that the family dinner was inversely related to the overweight prevalence (Taveras et al 2005). Moreover, family dinner was also associated with less engagement of teenagers in drinking, smoking, and usage of other substances compared to those who miss family dinners. Although family dinners have all those positive cases, there are cases whereby they are disadvantageous. This is because they may result to conflict. This can be either between parent and children or children themselves hence it is better if one of the parties is not present.

Antecedents and Consequences

The above concept has various antecedents and consequences. These are the preceding outcomes after the concepts application. First, grades of children in school will go up because of family dinners. This is because most of the talks during the dinner will seek to give confidence the children to exert more in school as well as to congratulate those with excellent grades hence raising their morale. Furthermore, they also build the youth and the teenagers morally. This is through the advices that are given by the older adults to the teenagers. For example, the abstinence of smoking, drinking, and also using of other substances are some of the advice that the adults provide. In addition to that, the prevention of chronic diseases is increased since healthy eating is maintained during the family dinners. Children who attend these family dinners also improve in their manners, communication skills, as well as eating habits since they learn from the adults during the event.

Empirical Referents

Many phenomena can be used to exhibit the reality of the theory. For example in many families, the children may start achieving poor grades. It is unmistakable that the parents or the adults in that family encourage the children during the family dinners because it is the most opportune time for that leading to the improvement of grades in school. Furthermore, most of the teenagers in families who are addicts to different forms of drugs change their mind and eventually stop after a couple of family dinners in the presence of one of the adult in the family or the parents. These present some of the empirical referents of the concept.

Conclusion

Evidently, it is comprehensible that the model is crucial in the maintenance of not only well being or the health of a person but also life as a whole. Some of the new knowledge that acquired from the concept is that family dinner improves the health of the whole family. The more the family dinners the healthier the people in the family are likely to be. This is because healthy and balanced diet is observed. Other than that, it is knowledgeable to know that family dinner help to improve the communication skills of the siblings, as well as their eating habits. This is through teaching from the older adults during the dinner (Cha-Nam, 2005).
