I found Young & Korzun’s (2010) article entitled ” Sex, Trauma, Stress Hormones and Depression” in the Walden Library through a database search. This article comes from a scholarly database and journal, which means that it has been peer-reviewed and vetted, so the veracity of the information it presents cannot be questioned. Young et al. (2010) summarize gender differences and depression for and against factors such as stress, trauma, and hormones between men and woman and the biological differences therein. Furthermore, the author stresses how estrogen in woman plays a big factor to why woman might be far more prone to depression and changes in the pituitary gland.
I found Dicky & Azeni’s (1996) article entitled ” Persons with Dual Diagnoses of Substance Abuse and Major Mental illness: Their Excess Costs of Psychiatric Care” from Google search, which had thousands of results both peer-reviewed and not. This particular article is also a peer-reviewed article that was published in a highly touted journal. Dicky & Azeni (1996) conducted a study that examines the psychiatric treatment of those who suffer from mental illness as well as comorbid substance abuse in comparison with mentally-ill individuals who are not abusing any substances. Results show that individuals who are psychiatrically disabled in addition to substance abusers were strapped with treatment costs that were over sixty percent higher than those who were mentally ill and did not abuse substances. The main chunk to the cost difference is attributed to the necessity for acute psychiatric inpatient treatment because of substance abuse. Rates of comorbidity always yield higher financial and public health costs, but there are very few effective solutions to the problems posed. Various social and bureaucratic barrier stand in the way of an intervention that adequately addresses dual diagnoses being tested for its efficacy.
Both of these articles are scholarly in nature because they both offer all of the information necessary for a citation. Moreover, they were both published in renowned, scholarly databases and journals that require a subscription to various databases. Non-scholarly sources are readily available to the public. Both articles contain in-depth reference lists that cite other scholarly works, which is another sign of the scholarly nature of both articles. Peer-reviewed scholarly journals are of paramount importance to advancing any profession or scholarly discipline. Although supplemental works can be utilized in the research process, peer-reviewed articles and journals form the foundation upon which professional knowledge and scholarly, academic research is built on because the information found therein is clear, succinct, and credible. Peer-reviewed journals have credibility because such works are more highly regarded and held to higher standards than other kinds of publications. Peer-reviewed journals have review boards to ensure that all of the articles adhere to a scholarly format and the best academic scholarship. Authors are required to explain their research methodologies, objectives, and references, which further enhances the credibility and currency of the sources.
