Spanking, Article Review Example

The article addresses the controversial topic of spanking children.  In regards to a new study, the article deals with the increase in aggression that is linked to spanking.  It looks at three alternatives to spanking that may be able to help parents, in light of the drawbacks that are involved in spanking.

According to a study led by Assistant Professor Catherine Taylor at Tulane University in New Orleans, children who have been spanked are seen with more aggressive behaviors (Shute).  In the survey which analyzed data from 2,500 mothers, children who were at age five were involved in a number of aggressive behaviors.  Fighting, threatening, and bullying were among the common behaviors found in the recent study.

The article also touches upon the controversial nature of the subject.  While experts agree that it is not helpful, as a generalization from pediatricians, many parents support the act of spanking.   However, much of this has to do with the fact that most parents were spanked when they were a child (Shute).

The article lists three techniques for discipline to use alternatively to spanking (Shute).  Rewarding positive behavior is one step towards positive reinforcement.  Time outs work, especially when they are effective.  Lastly, consistency is key when disciplining a child (Shute).

Relative to the family, spanking should be addressed.  While those who feel strongly regarding its use may not be swayed, it seems as if though studies have identified the negative effects it may have on a child.  Using other less corporal forms of punishment may offer effective and better ways of disciplining a child, however.
