Spare Change by Teresa Zsuffa, Article Review Example

Humanity in all of its generosity, and lack thereof, is explored in ‘Spare Change’ by Teresa Zsuffa. The author introduces the audience to its central character who is not the giving type. Not only does the protagonist refuse to give a stranger in need directions, but she despises the idea of the individual following closely behind her at the narrative’s beginning. Although the central character’s mood lightens up throughout the story, it is clear that generosity is not something that comes to her in abundance.

Perhaps the most indicative sign of the central character’s lack of compassion is her refusal to lend a helping hand at the beginning of the story. As if remaining quiet is not enough to showcase her lack of concern, the main character has the audacity to become angry when the stranger, who has asked everyone for help in giving her navigation to no avail, misses her stop.

Although cruel, Zsuffa’s character accurately describes the mentality of humanity on most occasions. Instead of reaching out to one’s fellow man, individuals would rather remain silent and watch disaster unfold. Zsuffa sets out to tell a story about two people who cross paths and, in so doing, depicts a precise account of humanity in the twenty first century.
