The most important strategies are those that implement the SMART method. SMART is an acronym for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound goals. By using this strategy to determine the direction the organization should take based on the vision and mission statement, managers and leaders can be sure to have an objective method of pointing things in the right direction.

By noticing when things are deviating from the vision and mission and gently easing things back into line with these ideals, the manager-leader, helps ensure success while implementing the operational imperatives of the goals set down in the strategic plan.
