A male child age ten was given the Gifted and Talented assessment to determine if he met the standards to be placed at the Magnet School for gifted and talented children. This consisted of an IQ test both visual, spatial and mathematics and creativity. He was a transfer from another school. The purpose of this assessment was to determine if the young boy could transition from the regular curriculum to a more advanced curriculum which included changing to another school, the public gifted and talented school for high achievers with an IQ above 128, respectively. “The most important criterion in diagnosing a child with a learning disability is through the use of an IQ test. The aim is to measure the intelligence of the child which is supposedly the potential of the child.” (Strydom & Du Plessis, 2010). IQ testing began in France when psychologists wanted to differentiate between children who were supposedly normal and those who were considered inferior. This was to avoid the disruption of the normal children. “Intelligence is a fixed quantity that cannot be changed or increased.” (Strydom & Du Plessis, 2010).
The reliability and validity was to test in the math and sciences including visual and spatial relations including creativity through the IQ standardized test. If the boy scored at least a 128 he would be admitted into the school. The testing parameters were timed. All children in the gifted school were administered the same test under the same conditions. Many children in the gifted and talented school also possessed another creative side such as artistic or musically inclined in addition to a superior IQ level. The assessment was timed. ii) After obtaining permission from the student’s parent(s), attend the transition meeting for this student, and answer the following questions in your case study: The parents were spoken to about the test prior to the testing and the administrator explained the advantages to attending the school such as the advanced cirrocumulus and the higher attendance to college. The purpose of the meeting was to inform the parents of the advantages of the school and to inform the child of what would be incurred whilst taking the IQ test. The results of the test set the children apart from normal children with average to low IQ’s. The school is designed for gifted and talented children only.
