Evaluating the SOS suicide prevention program: a replication andextension

Since suicide among young people is one of the most serious health problems facing the United States, the authors find this topic to be interesting. This article builds upon information previously established by the authors. Ultimately, the authors were seeking to test the impact of a short-term intervention on suicidal behavior. Although there are other risk factors in addition to mental illness, depression, and alcohol use for suicidal behavior, the authors appear to select these three for examination in order to avoid the analysis of confounding factors. This makes me wonder whether additional research has been completed on other factors and the basis of this selection. The authors do not do an adequate job of explaining their selectivity. It seems like the analysis for this project would not be accurate because the author excluded data for individuals for analysis if they chose to not answer a particular question.

Suicide prevention: a study of patients’ views

The goal of this article was to determine which interventions would be useful to help psychiatric patients when they feel suicidal. There seemed to be a small sample size for this study. The authors determined what variables would be used for the study on the basis of a literature review. Since the authors only reached out to a small sample of individuals, a small amount of eligible participants responded to their survey. It appears that this sample will be biased because a majority of patients are schizophrenic and/or bipolar. The results of this study would best be presented in a table. They are not summarized in a manner that is immediately understandable. Lastly, the analysis makes many leaps and bounds that were not expected based on the results. While the results appear to be useful and confirm other psychological studies, it is difficult to determine why the authors think this is unique or important.
