According to some authors (Spira), social media and communicating using technology destroys society and interpersonal relationships. While people today tend to interact with each other using email, instant messenger, and applications, talking on the chat does not replace face-to-face meetings. The author of the current study is arguing that while the communication patterns of Generation X and Y, most involved in using social media have changed, individuals’ interpersonal relationships have not been negatively affected, and there are many advantages of using social media to stay connected with those one cares about.

Social media is useful when individuals are looking to express themselves. Self-actualization is one of humans’ needs. Using social media is cheap, fast, real-time, and is more convenient than setting up a meeting. Those who have a hobby or a passion can connect with like-minded people, get information fast, and even arrange meetings using social media. Those who are looking for new ideas will find them using social media. They can pick the content that they can relate to, and this means that Facebook users will get relevant information, provided that they use the tools provided in an effective way, and learn more effectively.

Social media is also one of the best ways of connecting with loved ones living far away. In today’s globalized world, it is normal for husbands to travel a lot for work, young people to leave for university, and those getting married moving to a new country, Instead of having to spend money on travel and phone calls, individuals can stay updated on family matters, events, and remain connected with their roots. This does not mean that  they would not want to meet their  family members in person, but their interactions can be more regular. Years ago, when people moved and forgot to tell their friends lost social connections without a chance to reconnect. However, thanks to social media, one can reconnect with old school friends and colleagues without having to search for their address.

Finally, social media creates a sense of belonging. While some analysts say that the cohesion within virtual communities is weaker than that within real groups that have regular face-to-face meetings. However, online groups do not exclude individuals based on their geographic location.  Setting up an interest group online is the most democratic way of building a movement or creating a community.

As a conclusion, social media use and texting can be beneficial for interpersonal communication, however, the success depends on the individual choices of the user, as well.
