Introduction

Modern technology impacts virtually every sector of our lives and we have truly come to rely on this. This is evidenced by facts like we switch on a light and electricity provides illumination; we use computers as an instant gateway for communication via e-mail and social networking. Very few of us however fully understand this technology and we rely upon experts for repairs and maintenance. If the technology was to be removed it would have a major impact on our way of life; as such we have in many regards become subservient to the technology.

Social Critique

New forms of technology are part of our evolution and growth and expand our horizons of understanding. It is the analogy of the toolbox and selecting the right tool for the job. We do not need to know the intricate workings of the tool but sufficient knowledge to apply them to our purpose. The social networking in technology has helped to expand our human contact in the sanitized world of the virtual computer environment. Ultimately however we need to expose to real world social mixing and run the risk of bad encounters. Applications like Facebook have been used to tighten the circle of family and friends and in this regard the technology has made people more introvert. Benefits to new technology are essentially : speed of application, less time to complete tasks; improved communications enabling global contact to a wide network of people; enhanced learning and education opportunities etc. (Rawlins, G.J. 1998)

Conclusion

We are all somewhat addicted to the concept of new technology in virtually every aspect of our life. We are always looking for applications of doing things smarter and saving our time on menial or trivial tasks. A case in point is the USB drive or Pen / Flash drive. We can now carry around a virtual library of information, data, music on a small storage device the size of your thumb. Further the popularity of the mobile phone and the ability to text message, receive and transmit audio messages, access the internet and take pictures. Virtually everybody now has one of these communication devices but very few of us understand the intricate technology that they contain.
