The regular use of research knowledge in nursing practice would be an ideal situation, but this reality has yet to be achieved due to the existence of several barriers (Kajermo et al., 2008). The lack of an academic degree may be a barrier to research knowledge, though virtually all nurses are now entering the profession with at least some post-secondary academic experience. Nurses also identify the lack of support from managers and unrealistic work goals as perceived barriers to using research knowledge, as well as other organizational barriers like time restraints and a lack of self-government (Brown, Wickline, & Glaser, 2008). These barriers could also be present in a practice setting, especially when considering the workload of both educational and practical experience.

The barriers to using research knowledge in nursing can be daunting, but they might be overcome with the proper approaches. In accordance with the spirit of evidence-informed nursing, it would be best to keep abreast of the latest research in the nursing field, especially as associated with one’s current position. Of course this is easier said than done due to the time restrictions associated with being a nurse, but it is still possible to at least browse the abstracts of pertinent journals whenever reading time may be available. Optimal time management could provide enough time to lessen the impact of this barrier. Organizational and managerial based barriers could be addressed through direct communication with supervisors. If possible, the continuation of education throughout one’s career could be the largest asset to maintaining research knowledge.
