Sport is rarely a befitting motivation or precursor to an interest in the medical field, but for me, 12 years of gymnastics training contributed to my interest in biomedical sciences. Self-discipline and perseverance have constantly emerged as values that I linked to my gymnast activities and are directly applicable to biomedical sciences as they have the same focus on perfection and mental and physical strength. Specifically looking at parts of the human body that has muscles, tendons and ligaments that tend to influence or be affected by athletic activity, I soon realised that biomedical sciences are a way to pursue an understanding of how all parts of the body work together for a seamless performance. Furthermore, I explored aspects of teamwork in independent sports such as gymnastics and related it to what it would mean as a medical professional to work together with other specialists and improve patient lifestyles.
My academic journey so far has had highlights of excellent grades and leadership in different aspects directly related to my growing passion for biomedical sciences. I have been a subject representative in biology A-level courses and attained an undergraduate degree in the same field, giving me a balance of professionalism and leadership prospect for my postgraduate studies and my career in general. The world is constantly changing, and in academics, I have realised that evolution is inevitable, and staying updated or interested in the changes in anatomy or the contributions of science to human interaction forms a basis for exploring postgraduate studies and additional certifications in personal and professional development. The advancements within the medical field have resulted in a shift to the psychology specialisation as inspired by the prospects of utilising neurological understanding to further impact human physiology.
I have had experience practising in the field through work placements and internships. One particular instance that I appreciate for its contribution to my passion in pursuing this postgraduate degree is a leadership program called Dancing Dreams. in a bid to spread disability awareness and volunteer to work with cerebral palsy patients, I understood biomedical sciences as a reprieve for both athletes and people living with disabilities are like as part of two populations in society that require additional support. In another instance, working with professionals like Dr Yin at the MAMS program opened up a world of possibilities in applying the physical and neurological understanding of biomedical sciences. To specialise in psychiatry does not limit the possibilities of biomedical sciences, considering that physiology and pathology are ultimately influenced by neurological aspects of illness or injury.
Masters in Biomedical Sciences is the next step for me, considering that the undergraduate degree contributed to my understanding of the role of biomedical scientists in pursuing the diagnosis and treatment of diseases to resolve issues affecting society. The undergraduate experience provided integration of various medical fields, including pathology physiology and pharmacology, a foundation that I find significant towards the pursuit of postgraduate studies in the same area to specialise in the particular subset. The research training and additional experience that I anticipate from these graduate studies already contribute towards my contribution in the research field, particularly on disability and athletics. With a psychological specialisation approach, I hope to put the patients ahead of the development curve in a way that they are not just treating symptoms but protecting their physiology entirely.
The career path that follows and I aspire to pursue after the postgraduate course is tied to my gymnast passion and my previous experience working with people living with a disability. Understanding that a considerable difference exists between those that have special abilities or utilise resilience and training to improve in athleticism and those that are unable to use their limbs require advancements in technology that can be facilitated through biomedical sciences. Many times in instances of physical therapy or other physiological Fields that are covered under biomedical sciences, there is an aspect of psychology and how it affects the patient’s ability to improve or undergo therapy. Exploring a career after postgraduate studies in biomedical Sciences by focusing on psychology is futuristic in exploring how technology and research in the future will be able to address matters of the mind in injury and illness.
Your institution is mainly the best fit for my aspirations to pursue my master’s degree in biomedical sciences. In addition to being my dream institution, I have followed keenly on the available resources on campus as well as off-campus, especially in terms of networking and building a community beyond the school environment. I believe you are an approach to medical education as a holistic combination of professional and personal development is what I’m looking for, and my values on collaborating with peers and Faculty is in line with the objectives that you’ve set forward for the institution. I look at your institution as a potential for my individual development and contribution to society through the diagnosis and treatment of conditions as supported by present and future research.
