The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Essay Example

The Great Gatsby is a novel, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and it is considered to be one of his best works. Speaking about the geography of the novel, one should understand that the book dictates its themes and characters. As for this essay, it communicates the connections between the residents of the distant areas, described in the novel; to be precise, it argues that despite the fact the main heroes are scattered in different social areas, one cannot but encounter their cohesion and unity. Concerning the divergences within the residential locations, one should take into account the thing that the concept of dissimilar communities highlights the interweaving of the main heroes, which is absolutely culture-free; moreover, social diversity leads to the drastic changing role of women.

Contemplating about the four geographic locations that the author mentions in the novel (West Egg, East Egg, the valley of ashes, and New York City), one should become aware that each of them corresponds to certain idea or the character, involved in the novel. As for West Egg, it is similar to Gatsby, who is overwhelmed with eccentricity, confirming the appearance of rich people alongside the upper class of the 1920s. Concerning East Egg, it has much in common with Buchanas – being rich and powerful. Buchanas appeared to symbolize the past nobility that was dominating the American landscape. Regarding “the valley of ashes”, it has much in common with George Wilson possessing no hope and symbolizing moral degradation of the society. New York City is the embodiment of chaos, full of diverse lifestyles that had much in common with the “quality of distortion” that Nick faces in East Egg.  It is necessary to come to understanding that the specificity of setting in the discussion novel is the matter of great importance, since it contributes to the emergence of remote areas where the moral code of different personages is made to collide with each other.

The cooperation between the main heroes in Fitzgerald’s novel is quite controversial; the point is that all the personages possess certain directions. Contemplating upon the relationship between Nick and Gatsby, one can hardly say whether Gatsby honestly wanted to make friends with Nick or just used him to approach Daisy. Obviously, Gatsby was aimed to have affairs with Daisy, and it is vivid that at first he was interested in friendship with Nick, since it could help him get closer to Daisy.

Analyzing a novel Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, it is necessary to make mention that the author draws special attention to the emergence of changing gender stereotypes in a society of complete controversies. He showed the changes, which came after 1920. Before the First World War, the women were considered as predominately accountable for housekeeping.  Fitzgerald notes that after 1920 the females appeared to be an integral part of the night life, having fun and drinking as well as dressing and acting more promiscuously. Daisy Buchanan, for instance, states that she “… never had a drink before.”  It is important to admit that a number of rebellious women visited Gatsby’s house; obviously, one of the most notable things about the women was their “…hair shorn in strange new ways.” Looking into the entity of gender roles that one can encounter while reading the discussion novel, it is worth saying that despite the some new allowances the female are endowed with, they still can be characterized by being inferior to men.

To sum up, reading one of Fitzgerald’s best novels The Great Gatsby, it becomes clear that despite different worlds the main heroes live in, there was still relationship between all of them; in addition, the author clarifies the way that the modern-day woman changed due to the intertwining of people of different social classes. Obviously, the readers can learn a lot from the novel, including the fact that absolutely unlike people can still affect each other and their relationships are likely to result in certain modifications within gender stereotypes.
