The Great Turning, Article Review Example

“In The Great Turning, Korten argues that corporate consolidation of power is merely a contemporary manifestation of what he calls “Empire”: the organization of society by hierarchies of domination grounded in violent chauvinisms of race, gender, religion, nationality, language, and class. The Great Turning makes the case that we humans are a choice making species that at this defining moment faces both the opportunity and the imperative to choose our future as a conscious collective act” (Korten 2009). Korten further argues we cannot unravel the crisis that the Earth is currently in but we can affirm the cultural values that we have to make the Earth a better place in which to live. The book aims to help humans realize the truth about the world in which we live instead of the stories we try to make ourselves believe and live according to which are essentially a figment of our imagination.

Economy, events and meltdown in the world will shift a change in the world encouraging us to rebuild functioning communities in order to survive. We should concentrate on growing healthy families, children and lives in order to survive. Profound wisdom will guide us on taking the species of the world to a new level in order to survive. The communities that fair best will be the ones that act on local supply chains instead of relying on outsourcing. Priority on life values over financial values will prove to be the strong point for a self-governing and defining community. We should accept responsibility for one another or we will be our way to collective suicide.

“Americans are finally realizing that a global community is bringing down the local community and waking up to learn we must take over and make this a local community.” (Korten 2009). He has studied great examination of the nature of human creation to learn some 5,000 years ago that gender balance was established that ruler and power dynamic of oppression was established in Mesopotamia or Iraq. With this establishment there was a faithful turn away from humanity and natural resources away from society required to maintain the best for our society. Our current situation has a long history that is based on military and institutional authority and power rather than thinking of what is best for our society as a whole. Empirical cultures and institutions will be with us forever as long as we allow this kind of exploitation to rule us. We have seen these social manifestations to break down our political, environmental and social collapse on Earth. We have a responsibility to ourselves and our Earth to change this back to humanity by embracing partnership within ourselves.

The pattern of domination and exclusion remains constant but we can change this radical and devastating change to local communities. Since we are currently in a U.S. dollar melt down with the peak oil melt down it is prime time to make this social and economic change. We should act immediately to make this dependence on peak oil. We should make changes on oil dependent agriculture, oil dependent Wal-Mart’s in the middle of no where and oil dependence military uses. We can convert automobiles to other power sources but that is not realistic right now.

We are to expect about a 25% reduction in crop reduction because of climate change in the last year and projected climate change in the next year. The projected unemployment rate will project another 10% reduction to our economic loss in the next year. There were be escalated military conflict within the next year or two with these choices but we expect this conflict to taper off once a stance has been made. There will always be extremists to any good opposition or change. Those in charge of political power of this country are incapable of leading social change over this country.

Psychologists report that people enjoy living a pathway cantered by a spiritual conscienceless through nature and cultural of institutions systematically denied. We are denied rights to live according to nature and humanistic lives hence it is believed if given the choice to live by divine virtue men and women would do such with success. “We will be taught to live in a creative partnership with one another on Earth.” (Video: David Korten The Great Turning). We must be willing to learn the reality of our politically divided nation and accept that reality of the red states and blue states. It is then that we can make this positive change to change this strong consensus that big business has too much power and society is focused on the wrong priorities. “We should not support economic growth as our primary indicator of human progress any longer rather we should primarily focus on our quality of life and our families to denote our human progress in life.” (People Centred Development Forum). Working together to break the silence and engaging the community with this movement will make our community an Earth related community that we can gain control over.
