The Hidden Value of It Departments, Article Review Example

This paper is based on the article of ‘The IT Departments hidden value’ which is written by Austyn, Allison. This article was published in the Middle East Digest of Economics in the 57^th volume issue and page number 41. The major terms of this article caters to the Information technology linking it to the Management and purchasing. This paper reviews this article by summarizing its core concepts. This article focuses on the IT functions in the organizations in the year 2013. The reason for selecting this year is that in this phase the new IT technologies like cloud computing shifted the personnel’s of IT from the purchasing of equipment focus to a focus on getting the services of IT on the basis of pay-for use citing other utilizes and the electric corporations as the differentiation.

The article is based on the interview conducted with SEC of Saudi Electricity Co. named Abdul Rahman Yahya, who emphasized the role of IT and said that the role of Chief Information Officer (CIO) has just moved further from technology provision. Now the IT aims to fulfill the objectives of the business. He gave the examples of small and medium corporations and said that instead of investing in IT infrastructure companies these days are buying IT services. The examples involved the ERP system like SAP which integrates all the core functions of the organization like operations, finance, accounting, marketing, sales etc. Another major impact the IT services has is the cloud computing technology. Mr. Abdul Rahman also says that his company also aims to invest in the IT infrastructure i.e. they will virtualize the software of the company.

In short, he emphasized the importance of IT and its concerned departments in aiding the future objectives and strategies of the business. In the end he concludes that ‘Whenever any enterprises is connected with the internet it pays for its usage. This is the main theme of IT in the future.’
