(Freudenburgh, 1978) | Changing Public Policy: The impact of Public opinion, ant-war demonstrations, and War costs on senate voting on Vietnam war motion, Paul Burnstein and William Freudenberg, 1978, The University of Chicago Press.

This paper addresses the controversial subject matter of how policies are derived that shape aspects of the Vietnam War. It examines the impact between 1964 to 1973 and how the Senate dealt with policy change as a result of anti-war demonstrations, the cumulative costs of the war and public opinion in general. It was the invasion of Cambodia that seemed to be a pivotal point in influencing senate opinion. The media piped all of this directly into your home providing reality of the killing and the depiction of hippies and a changing US society at home.

(Beattie, 2000) : The Scar That Binds: American Culture and the Vietnam War, Keith Beattie, 2000, New York University Press.

This book considers the sociological and psychological conditions of the Vietnam War. It was considered that American society was so fractured by the war that it may not recover again. It was the end of the American dream and the beginning of a new social era. The war was referred to as “the wound that would not heal”. The book is highly compelling as Beattie delves into the wording and metaphors of the war. The concepts of words like HOME; THE WOUND; THE VOICE (referring to the voices of the veterans returning home.

(Slater, 1990) | The pursuit of Loneliness: American culture at the breaking point, Philip Slater, 1990, Beacon Press New York.

It was Philip Slater who provided a modern perspective on individualism and isolation. In his research he considers the many facets that represent the troubles of a modern society. The American people become oblivious of threats that represent society and simply chose to ignore them. This was very true of the Vietnam War and many simply ignored the horrors and focused more upon the benefits that American life represented.

(Anderson, 2006) | One Vietnam War should be enough and other reflections on Diplomatic history and the making of foreign policy. D.L. Anderson, 2006, Diplomatic History, pp. 1-21

The article considers the ramifications of policy making on the Vietnam War and the impact this has on history and the domestic sociological considerations in the USA. It particularly zeros in on aspects of foreign policy making and the controversies that surround important decision making concepts.

(Schrecker, 1999): Many are the crimes: McCarthyism in America, Ellen Schrecker, 1999, University of Princeton Press.

This book is extremely interesting as it explains both the rise of communism and the brutal opposition to this by the American administration. It builds the pathway for the justification of the Vietnam War and how policies were geared towards making this happen. It deals with the aspects of government ideology and the influence of both Russia and China as emerging powers.

(Andrew Wiest, 2009) | America and the Vietnam War: Re-examining the history of a generation, Andrew Wiest, Mary Kathryn Barbier, Glenn Robins, 2009, Routledge.

This paper focuses more upon the conflict in Vietnam and how this impacted American Society. The overseas conflict literally changed the way the nation thinks and had a profound effect in the determination of the future of American society, post the Vietnam War conflict. In particular the future role of women in society, the role of the African/American, redefining racial issues and the treatment of returning veterans for post-traumatic stress disorder
