The Importance of Family Factors and Generation Status, GCSE Coursework Example

Pages: 2

Words: 435

GCSE Coursework

Managing and preventing chronic disease provides an opportunity to emphasize specific behavioral challenges and outcomes to improve health and wellbeing. The use of motivational interviewing in this process is instrumental in enabling providers to recognize where patients might be hesitant to change and recognize areas for improvement that are realistic and appropriate (Resnocow & McMaster, 2012). The motivational interview must be based upon the patient’s ability to openly express his or her concerns, identity, and limitations, as the provider identifies areas where change might transform the patient’s health in different ways (Van Buskirk & Wetherell, 2014). Through this process, the patient must be able to recognize how health might improve under specific conditions and what steps are required to ensure that the patient receives the appropriate and timely care and treatment that will lead to changes for the better in health and wellbeing (Van Buskirk & Wetherell, 2014).

For the patient in question with lung cancer, motivational interviewing may provide a level of commitment by the patient to reduce his smoking habit to improve his health (Douglas et.al, 2011). Nonetheless, it is also necessary to address cultural identifiers and challenges that influence this patient’s health, including customs, traditions, and family support (Douglas et.al, 2011). From a Hispanic point of view, the provider must recognize how decision-making is affected by cultural values and beliefs and how customs impact behaviors and habits for the patient (Chang, Natsuaki, & Chen, 2013). At the same time, utilizing the resources and input that family provides may play a valuable role in shaping the patient’s environment and his ability to improve his own health through behavioral changes (Chang et.al, 2013). This process will enable the provider to develop a specific strategy for change that will coincide with the patient’s overall perspectives of his culture and how he identifies health issues and will support an environment that is amenable to behavioral modifications as necessary (Chang et.al, 2013).
