Abstract
The purpose of the study was to explore core professional nursing values that baccalaureate nursing students should exhibit. The abstract has explicitly analyzed main features in the study which offer a reader an understanding of what the research entails.
Statement of the Problem
The study has adequately explored how professional nursing values are critical to health provision in medical facilities. It highlights the nursing values to include professionalism, activism, trust, care, and justice. As such, the statement of the problem has been explicitly identified, and they are significant to the nursing profession. Furthermore, the Statement of the problem has been used to build a persuasive argument of the study.
Research question
Hypotheses have been clearly stated and have been used to explore the literature review. The research question in the study sought to explore the values that could influence the internalization of nursing professional values. The research question further sought to demonstrate the professional nursing values that most baccalaureate nursing students’ exhibit. The research questions are objective to the study because the research study and literature review has been conducted on this basis.
Literature review
The literature review for this study was obtained from reliable nursing research information sources such as CINAHL, Ovid Medline, PubMed, and Google Scholar. The information incorporated from these sources is objective to the topic of the study. In terms of relevancy, peer-reviewed sources span for about twenty which is quite long to the extent that some information might be irrelevant. The nursing profession has been evolving in the past twenty years, and this has also led to changes in nursing values. As such, research of the past twenty years might not provide an objective view of the current nursing profession. As such, the literature review is not up to date but still offers crucial insight into the study.
Conceptual Theoretical Framework
The conceptualization of the theoretical framework adopted by the study sought to explore whether the demonstration of professional nursing values of baccalaureate students increase between sophomore, junior and senior years. This theoretical framework cannot apply because there are baccalaureate nursing students who exhibit better professional nursing values at sophomore year compared to senior. Professional nursing values are based more on attitudes, beliefs, and talent of the student.
Method
Protection of Human Rights
The procedures used have safeguarded rights of study participants because their names and identity has not been mentioned. This makes the study ideal for external review. The study design is meant to minimize the risks of participating in the study.
Research Design
The research methods used to conduct the study was non-experimental, descriptive design. The technique was objective for this study because of its capacity to examine non-manipulative variables for each study year. The latent ability of each nursing student was determined through GPCM analysis. The technique was good for this study because the population examined has different qualities that have to examine in order to derive a conclusion professional nursing values at each year of study.
Population and Sample
The population for the study was a total of 407 baccalaureate students from different years of study. The population was quite fair for each year. The sample is not biased as it takes into consideration factors of age, demographic region and ethnicity.
Data collection
Data from was collected through NPVS-R method which is ideal based on the population of the study. This method relied on interviews which is ideal for this study thus creating more credibility.
Procedures
The participants in the study received an intervention during their clinical routines. However, the number of interventions decreased as they advanced in the year of study.
Data Analysis
Data analysis of latent variables such as activism, trust, caring, and professionalism was conducted through confirmatory factor analysis. This technique is ideal because it measures differences for each latent variable.
Findings
The study revealed that internalization and demonstration of nursing professional values of baccalaureate nursing students increase between the sophomore, junior, and senior year of baccalaureate nursing education
Recommendations
From the responses and results of the study, it is apparent that students in the initial years of study have to be mentored on professional nursing values.
Personal Reflection
It is essential that professional nursing values amongst baccalaureate nursing students are done in a variety of settings to see how students could respond to different situations.
