The Modern Slavery of the 21st Century, Article Critique Example

The research question addressed in this article is whether the transatlantic slave trade that was abolished in the 1800s is comparable to human trafficking in the 21^st century. In their thesis, the authors claims that the main driving factor for both forms of slavery is financial gain. However, there are many factors that make the human trafficking black market in the modern era more profitable, which is why it will be more challenging to end completely. Ultimately, the authors argue that since legal ownership is not necessary in the human trafficking industry and there are more individuals who can be utilized in this manner, this illegal practice is becoming more and more prevalent. According to several sources cited, human trafficking generates more than $11 billion annually in sales. In addition, between 800,000 and 4,000,000 men, women, and children are being trafficked across international borders on an annual basis. The authors conclude that, despite our attempt to abolish slavery, it still exists in the form of human trafficking. As a consequence, slavery continues to be a threat to our human rights today.

Ultimately, the article was effective because it uses a wealth of information from primary peer-reviewed sources. However, the manner in which the argument was connected was not necessarily strong and could have used improvement. This article can be used practically to serve as evidence for a solution to human trafficking. Since slavery in its ancient form has been abolished in the modern world, we can reasonably apply evidence from this situation to help abolish human trafficking. While ridding the world of human trafficking would be more challenging, we are aware that international cooperation and the establishment of more stringent law enforcement would be beneficial for this purpose.
