Article Review

How well do you think the leadership lessons of Steve Jobs might be applicable to healthcare organizations?

The leadership lessons is Steve Jobs is highly applicable to healthcare organizations. In the modern world, healthcare institutions are becoming increasingly aware that they must operate as a business in order to remain successful in the light of hospital closures. As a consequence, they must have an administration that is highly organized and is therefore able to facilitate this organizations through the facility. Steve Jobs was able to accomplish this, as he was excellent in organizing the resources he had available in the most effective manner. In the beginning of his career, these resources were very little due to manpower and financial constraints, but his leadership allowed his team to be productive. This demonstrates that with effective leadership, even failing hospitals can regain their former status by carefully considering where cuts should be made, resources dispersed, and whether employees should be better supported or provided with more training to support hospital goals. Specifically, this pertains to the organization of medical equipment, staff, and funds. Business analytics can be applied to the operations of the hospital as well to determine if new interventions and policy changes have a positive influence on net earnings.

Summarize the article by Karpf and colleagues, and reflect on how the planning experiences at the University of Kentucky could be adopted by other institutions?

The article demonstrates that it is necessary to identify a shared goal and then to set an organized plan in place to make it happen. If a timeline is given and specific responsibilities are delegated, a complete shift in workplace production could occur in a six month period. During this time, the planning should be supported by the management by motivating employees and rewarding them for their good work. Therefore, other institutions would be able to accomplish such a shift if they are able to adopt an effective project management plan that provides specific time constraints and provides employees with the means by which the work can be finished accurately and on time.
