The Use of Word Guy, Essay Example

Essay

The use of word guy has lately been increased, making it look official. It has been used in many disciplines to an extent it has found its way into English dictionaries, although with a different meaning from which it is used. Looking for the English meaning, the word guy refers to a man or a boy, but also goes ahead to incorporate the application in referring to both sexes. This is where the confusion is raised since some people understand it from the male point of view while others take it to mean both men and women. It has been claimed that it is a word that show male dominance in the society, but social scientists argue otherwise. Those who support the application of the word in both sexes argue that guy should be the neutral point where no gender is more strong that the other. When the name guy is used, it shows the equality of sexes and gives people an equal opportunity to react to the request. For example, if somebody calls for help and shouts, “Please guys, help me!” this means that it is the first person to get to the venue whose support will be recognized.

The society has been divided into gender lines where people mention men first and sometimes failing to notice the presence or contribution of women. However, some people argue that the society is looking for an excuse to continue with male chauvinism, disguised in the gender equality terms. The word guy has brought confusion on several occasions where some people use it in its dictionary meaning to mean male and women refuse to respond to it. As the society inclines towards gender equality, people are avoiding to use the typical gender-based names like man and woman, and are opting to the informal names that do not refer to a particular gender. When used in a group, the understanding becomes different, although, for the younger generation, people are beginning to uphold it as their means of equalizing genders.

Thinking of changing the meaning of the name to mean gender-less individuals will not make much difference, since its meaning is already based on the understanding of its usage. The society should uphold it the way it is and remove any gender attachment in it so that it can have the same meaning as ‘people.’ The usage of the word is intended to refer to people, regardless of their age or gender. For that reason, the misunderstanding depends on the way individuals think about gender equality. People who have a mentality of the male sex as superior to female are the ones who get hurt when the word is used. For the sake of harmony and integration in the society, we need to begin by replacing the mentality of men rule and establish a neutral ground where gender does not make a difference in thinking.

The word guy is applied differently by different age groups in the society, and the time there will be found zero ground for its application, that is the time society will have a similar understanding. The younger generation is becoming a little bit casual with their usage of words, and it could be the reason some of these upcoming words are getting confusing. When a lady uses the word guy, it brings a male inclined meaning. But, when a man uses the word in the presence of mixed gender, it appears neutral, and this might be the foundation of the confusion. The word guy is informal and does not have applicability in the corporate world. Conversely, in the informal relations among corporate workers, it is highly used.

Upon the inclination of the society towards equalizing genders and upholding contribution of all people, there is a need for people to think about a third group of people who do not have a gender. These are the people who contribute to issues with credibility without influence from their gender. That word needs to be understood to mean ‘people’ and remove the attachment with any gender. For it to become clear, the society has to find a common meaning and legalize its applicability. As much as the formal world tends to disapprove its usage, there is no way it can be removed from the language of the upcoming generation.

In conclusion, word guy has been a prime source of controversy, bringing forward different meanings to different people, and it is time the society upheld it and found a common ground for it. The society needs to be founded on gender-neutrality, where no gender is regarded as superior to the other. Modernization comes with changes in the way people think and the efforts towards eradicating gender-based violence, and discrimination should come with establishing equality. Gender equality should not be forced, rather, it should come naturally through the society approaches to the language used while referring to people. The word guy should not give people problems, but should be a foundation of a genderless society where people do not use their gender to support their actions and thinking.
