This assignment evaluates on what tourist would like to know after reading the two articles “Redwoods Clothe the Oakland Hills” and “Sequoia Sempervirens” both authored by Evanosky, Dennis when they are considering to visit Oakland.
The tourist would mainly want to know how the history of Oakland and redwoods documented in the 18th and 19th century for them to know how the history was maintained and passed over to the current generations. Whether, it was though writing by the indigenous people who were residing there or oral history which was passed over and written later. With such understand they will be able to judge the accuracy of the information being told.
In the readings it is evident that the Redwood trees were discovered by Spanish and Padre Juan Crespi was the first European who described it and gave it its name based on the color of the wood which was first recorded on October 10, 1769. The tourist would like to know who its invention affected the Spanish in their use to build missions, ships and use them for navigational aid in the 18th and 19th century. The early people who were inhibiting the regions where the trees were mainly raised cattle and had very little interest on the trees until the first intruders in 1840 George Patterson and John Parker deserted English baroque Columbia. In 1841 there were two French carpenters Leroy and Sicard who exploited the woods for profit. The tourist would wish to know the effect of such exploitation to the forest cover and the role of Mexican government in control of logging of the trees.
They would also be interested to know the status of Coast Redwood so that they would be psychologically prepared on what they are to see. This would be important because with the historical readings they would visit Oakland with the historical picture being illustrated by the readings hence being disappointed to note that currently the situation has changed not as it was in the mid 19th century when Dennis is referring to in the articles.
The tourist will also need to learn about the details of the trees. Hence, they are likely to enquire other sources such as books or website contents where they would get information to read prior to the visit and even after the visit. They would also be interested on the biological makeup of the trees which makes them being fast growing to be such tall and withstand pest and strong wind that make it unique.
According to Dennis Coast Redwood is among the world’s fastest growing trees and the world’s tallest tree. The tourist would be interested to know which other tree would be more equivalent to Coast Redwood and the unique features which make it withstand all odds to grow very fast and survive for many years unlike other trees. They would also wish to know how the current forest cover and historical specimens with the oldest recorded specimen being 2000 years would be securely preserved to be seen by the future generations, due to increased threat of vegetations owing to deforestations which have contributed to reduction of the trees over the period of two centuries under review in the articles. Lastly they would wish to know if they were to visit, if they would get adequate guidance and informed guides who would respond to their queries amicably and show them the historical sites and structures associated with Coast Redwood.
