Research Proposal

Love owns many facades. Hate itself also has its many presentations. Nonetheless, there are often times when love and hate does exist simultaneously in several human relationships. The question is, how does love give birth to hate and how does this emotion affect the lives of the people involved in relationships that are placed in the middle of these two particular emotional bearings? To be able to explore the existence of both love and hate that is usually considered that balance of human relationships; several written works from well celebrated authors are to be examined. One would be that of Miller’s Death of a Salesman, another is that of Aphra Bern’s On her loving two equally and Ha Jin’s the Bride Groom.

In these particular stories, authors Ha Jin, Arthur Miller and Aphra Behn utilized the theme of ethical conditioning of each of their primary characters to impose on how they value both love and hate; through this theme, the authors create a clear definition on how humans respond to love with hate and the other way around due to sanctions of ethical decisions that makes it hard for them to decide on matters just through following their will.

These three stories entail to present the existence of both love and hate in several levels of human relationships and how much both emotions affect the individuals within the said connection. In Miller’s story, it could be realized how a father’s love could be the primary motivation of the children to work towards a recognizable reputation. Biff and Willy, although they do love each other as brothers, it seems that when it comes to pleasing their father, it was always a pattern of competition as to who becomes the best in their father’s eyes. In this case, love becomes the reason for the existence of hate. Ironically, this has even caused the death of the other with an impending indication that the live he lived has not been well spent because of the competition that they had throughout their lives.

As for the story of On her loving to equally, Bern discusses how a woman falls in love with two men who she could not choose from and ends up asking for Cupid to do the decision for her and at some point hating cupid as well for making her fall in love with two. In here, there have been two particular points of love and hate that has been presented. One is on the fact that the woman in the poem loves both of the men but hates the fact that she wants to be with both of them and yet she needs to make a choice. On the other hand, she does love the idea that cupid allowed her to love and yet she hates him for giving her an unfair decision to make. Why does she need to choose when she loves both? This is where the ethical dilemma comes in. The dictation of ethical concerns specifically insists on one needing to love only one putting a stop to what the heart decides and calls for a specific creation of a defined decision from the person concerned.

With the 12 stories compiled in the Bride Groom, Ha Jin opens up Muji City in China where men and women take different options of being to find the right mate for them to marry. Likely, the idea of betrayal is the opposite of the existence of love. Nonetheless, it is presented in the story that it is through betrayal that some do gain the realization of love. Many people today intend to not explore the unknown in the being of a person so as not to lose passion in them; nevertheless, only through the revelation of the truth will the love for a person be tested for its purity. Is it ethical to lie at all? Would it be bad to do it for the sake of finding real love? These questions specifically entail to access the ethical concerns that a person may have in consideration to the connection of betrayal and love.

With the existence of the idealisms of love and hate, people are able to make a manifested presentation of what they actually feel for each other. However, there are instances when some people use one emotion to cover the other. The reasons behind this matter are the focal discussion that is proposed to be researched further.  Believably, through research, it shall be better understood how love itself can be ethically questioned when it comes from the wrong foundation; nonetheless, this also opens up the possibility of making love an end result of some unethical decisions. Which one is better supported through rightful reasoning? The research being proposed hopes to explore the said matter about love, hate and the line that connects them through measuring the ethical issues concerned.
