Valleybrook hospital’s admission has increased at 15% per year this means that the work load has increased and the healthcare facility will need to expand for more capacity. What is most important is the quality of work that the healthcare offers to its customers. The work they do should be efficient so as to continue attracting new customers and the healthcare to continue growth.

However, there have been challenges to the increase in admissions. The admission clerks are so busy with admission and paperwork related to admissions, that they do not have adequate time to fill all their paperwork. This leads to a backlog in the operations of the healthcare facility.

The hospital is faced with two options including:

The existing admission clerk could work overtime. This would be an advantage to the hospital since they would save time on training new employees and the clerks would be motivated by the extra payments on overtime work. However, the employees may be overworked and may not be as productive while working overtime. More costs would be incurred by the healthcare facility ie. $720 per month and they would still have to incur extra fringe costs. These would eventually lead to more expenses and the profits for the year would be $285,306.

Hire part time filing clerks. The healthcare facility could hire a part time filing clerk who would be paid $10 per hour which is cheaper than overtime payment to the admission clerk. The part time filing clerk is more likely to perform better because they would not be overworked and their job description will be more direct. These costs that would be incurred by the healthcare facility are on a short time basis and no extra costs will be needed such as fringe. The part time filing clerk would dedicate 20 hours in a month while the existing admission clerk would only dedicate 12 hours. The profits at the end of the year would be approximately $287,256 which is more than what would be generated by the health care facility if the clerks worked overtime.

It is therefore beneficial for the healthcare facility to hire a part time filing clerk. The benefits would be in terms of productivity, efficiency and effectiveness which would even lead to further admissions in Valleybrook.
