Data Analysis

Data analysis is expected to inspect, clean, transform and model data with the aim of highlighting pertinent information to facilitate conclusions (Adèr & Mellenbergh, 2008). Inherent in this research presentation data analysis procedures took into consideration these factors by operationalizing key terms used in arriving at suitable responses pertaining to valuing caring behaviors within simulated emergent situations.

The terms evaluated were caring behaviors, simulation, nursing education and nursing situation. Researchers then adapted qualitative strategies applying concept analysis techniques. From a methodological perspective the data analysis techniques chosen were sufficient to validate research questions.

Precisely, an immersion process was undertaken by identifying words, phrases, and statements contributory to interpreting ways students applied caring in emergent situations. In expanding the analysis process researchers took two exploratory aims implicit in the study and rendered appreciative scores to words, phrases, and statement that were relevant in articulating the data processing techniques.

Further in expressing research dexterity a conventional content analysis was used to highlight words, phrases, and statements, which added evidence showing ways how students came to know their patients and expressed caring behaviors towards them in nursing situations. A high fidelity simulation was then applied to the data retrieved.

Findings

In explaining findings of a study researchers ought to reflect on  beginning ideas in order to focus  the discussion and lead readers back to where they started in order make inferences and detect subjects assumptions(Adèr & Mellenbergh, 2008). This was well represented in this study.

Findings were discussed by applying theoretical assumptions within a framework. The theory of knowing was specifically adapted in explaining how students came to know patients they cared for. Through these qualitative theoretical applications they revealed that it was from significant others such as children, parents and spouses that the knowing interaction was established.

Evaluation criteria pertaining to nursing situations were calls patients made requesting nursing services while in a nursing situation. Students took advantage of the mannequins for interaction of caring behaviors in nursing situations. They gained experience in prioritizing care-safety measures to enhance caring intervention strategies.

Fundamental findings related to discovering contemporary ways of knowing using theoretical assumptions were highlighted. Secondly, applying these to nursing situations through simulation methodologies brought clarity to the students interpretation of caring. Thirdly, by evaluating how call responses impacted nurse caring situation, researchers validated research questions and hypothesis. Themes development and thematic categorizations were very beneficial in arriving at these conclusions.

Discussion

Theoretical Integration

Researchers adapted an eclectic approach towards theory integration. For example, a wide range of theoretical perspectives were embraced in discussing findings as well as setting the tone for the research. Notable theories were Knowing and Maslow’s Hierarchy of basic human needs in defining the urgency of calls from patients (Eggenberger et.al, 2012). The article embraced a research of how students came to know persons as entities to be cared for. Importantly, an evaluation of how caring is expressed was conducted utilizing scientific mechanisms. These were high fidelity human stimulators in emergent nursing situations.

Implication of Findings

Implications of these findings pertain towards nursing service adjusting caring strategies in the hospital environment, which constitutes the nursing situation. It also initiates re-examination of Dr Jean Watson’s (1988) caring theoretical premise to determine its appropriateness in twenty-first century nursing intervention strategies.
